From Longgame Software:

With 3D World Map, you can view the earth in 3D, get references on 269 countries and entities, locate and compare more than 30,000 cities, compute the distance between any two points on the earth's surface, and amplify the altitude above sea level to see what the earth looks like.

In addition, you can run the program as a screensaver. A built-in MP3 player will pick a number of songs randomly from several directories or according to your settings, when the program starts. Almost every feature is customizable: You can change the color of the earth, adjust saturation and brightness of the globe texture, run the program in standard window, full screen or transparent window mode. Version 2.1 improved city selection.

This feature-packed program pulls double duty as an educational tool and a screensaver. As you might guess from its name, 3D World Map brings a three-dimensional rendering of the globe to your PC and displays a number of facts such as population, latitude, longitude, and altitude. The program's database appears to be very comprehensive, as we noticed information on many small and lesser-known places. The trial version restricts you to a low-resolution map, but it's still not too harsh on the eyes. Our only complaint is the lack of a zoom-in tool for closer inspection. 3D World Map also acts as a highly customizable screensaver. In this respect, you can choose from several differently designed globes, adjust the speed of the earth's rotation, select the degree of ocean and land opacity, and pick from a few camera angles. Also, rather than bundling a cheesy soundtrack, the developer wisely gives you the option to use your own MP3s. Because of its versatility, we can recommend this program to a wide range of users, and geography buffs and students will find it especially compelling.

  Pros: Looked great, moves smoothly, meaning low requirements. Recommended

  Cons: I do have the trial version and the trial's graphics are lowered, but I wouldnt think they'd be lowered as much as they were on mine. They were sadly low. But im not sure, so i wont deduct too much.

  "neat globe... pretty..."

  Pros: simple world map in a cool format... colors are adjustable, you can zoom in and out, but the trail version doesn't give you greater detail when you zoom... it keeps accurate time and displays the time of day for your location, and shows you day and night on the globe... hell it even shows the city i live in which is small and relatively hidden from the world...

  Cons: for what it is, not really a downside... doesn't seem to be intended to be an intense peice of software... just a neat veiw of the globe really
