This macro for Microsoft Excel displays directory listings easily and efficiently, but it doesn't surpass Windows default search function. Directory File Listing Utility for Microsoft Excel needs no installation as it is simply a macro programmed to display directory listings. Similar to the Windows search, it thoroughly scans the target location you've selected and displays filenames, sizes, dates and times, and paths. You can quickly sort the list according to column categories. The best features allow the user to export the results to a new Excel file or print the directory list. Both options are great news for those who need directory listing documentation. Though we're greatly impressed with its speed, it lacks common search options. You can't search for specific individual files or groups of files because it doesn't support wildcards. That alone makes this tool less efficient compared to other searching tools. Also, the listings are not hotlinked, and you can't directly execute or open a file. Excel users and novices may find this basic freeware useful, but there are many more robust file search and display applications available.

  "It works, but it is not necessarily useful"

  Pros: Pros:

  It does what it says and relatively quickly. I was able to list over 7500 .mp3 files on a mapped drive in less than 7 minutes.

  Cons: Cons:

  Once you have your list, there is not much you can do with it other than sort and print. All I wanted to do was reduce the default column width. It cannot be done. So I am stuck with a list where one column is over one page wide. Of what use is that?

  "The best directory printer I've used yet!"

  Pros: I used to painstakingly copy the filenames of invididual files I have collected before, for documentation. But thankfully, I found this and it saved a lot of effort. Plus, its free!

  Cons: You need microsoft excel for this to work. How about openOffice?

  Pros: This is an Excel spreadsheet with macros. It does its job perfectly, providing file lists with all the flexibility of organization Excel provides. Good job, and thanks.

  Pros: I looked at several some even charged, this is by far the best. Simple to use and you modify the output using the Export then copying to Word. Thanks John
