Directory Compare is a utility that enables you to compare the contents of two directories (and optionally their subdirectories), copy and move files between the directories or to any other directory, delete or rename files, open files in their associated applications, synchronize the contents of the directories, and print the listings of the directories or export them to comma-delimited files. Files in the selected directories are listed side-by-side in a grid.

You can choose various display filters to limit the listing to files existing in both directories, files which exist in one directory only, or files in both directories with a different size or date/time. Once displayed, files can be easily selected either individually or in groups and then copied, moved or deleted. Version 2.11 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

This program compares contents in one or more folders, but it does not open the files as promised. Directory Compare's common interface resembles many average Windows programs, since it is simply composed of standard buttons, drop-down lists, and radio boxes.

When comparing two folders, this program searches efficiently, neatly displays the files in a list with their corresponding details, and sorts the results depending on user preference. Amazingly, this application not only moves files from one folder to another, but it also copies, deletes, prints, and synchronizes new or missing files as well. Unfortunately, it does not open files immediately, though it claims it does.

In our tests, we selected an executable file and tried to open it, but nothing happened. Also, due to a missing help file, novice users may have trouble understanding this program right away. Nonetheless, this 15-day trial program is worth downloading if you often work with comparing folders and files.
