• "Accounting for everyone"

With Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2008, the software behemoth from Seattle proves it's capable of producing high-quality, free software for the masses. Beneath the clean layout, big icons, and point-and-click interface sits a foundation of solid business features that can benefit almost any company.

The freeware version covers most imaginable needs a small business might have for supportive software. Charge customers' credit cards or manage your bank accounts, payroll, and vendors. You can create and log invoices, quotes, cash sales, and even refunds. Beyond that, the program provides for the modern business, featuring built-in PayPal functionality--an absolute necessity for e-commerce--and a built-in connection to your Equifax profile for looking up credit profiles. There's also a letter-writing function with modifiable templates, simplifying your communication with clients and vendor.

The paid version provides more features, such as multiple user profiles, international currency support, regional transaction tracking, and a fixed asset manager.

As part of the Microsoft Office suite, the program includes contact-list integration with Outlook. Unfortunately, the installation is enormous and time-consuming, and it surreptitiously installs Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Secret installations do not instill confidence. The "advanced options" screen during the install process allows users to choose different database managers, if they have alternatives, but the choice isn't explicitly clear.

Overall, Office Accounting Express is an incredible piece of software for business managers. Comprehensive and obviously affordable, Office Accounting Express is hard to beat for business-software value.

  Cons: Not free, full of ads, 6 month trial, office required.

  And I almost thought microsoft were out of their old ways.

  "Terrible! NOT FREE. Microsoft scam"

  Cons: M.O.A.E. is NOT a free program and CNETshould not be listing it as having "no limitations". The program is a 6 month FREE TRIAL and then $9.95 per month. A covert rip-off and very lengthy time consuming download. Shame on Microsoft for using such sly, unscrupulous tactics.

  "Non accountant and better than Quicken"

  Pros: The functions flow very well and the ad's were not to annoying. The basic accounting function is there without the Debit and Credit terms. I would really try this before buying an accounting program if you are not wanting all the debits and credits.

  Cons: The need for Microsoft office and being given too many features NOT AVAILABLE in this version. It is not really free since Microsoft Office and Outlook are required to really us the basic functions.

  "If only i could install it!"

  Pros: After one hour of dnldng and installing , it comes up and says ....sorry you need MS Net Frame.. sourced the 2.0 ver of Net only to be told the version can not be installed because i have a latter ver.Ok, undeleted the previous and tried to intall Net 2.0...Ha-ha-ha no way

  Cons: Will never know if i like it and i do not care to find out. Some way of complicating programs, and extremely large.

  Will continue w/ my trusted "Dynacom Invoices and Estmates product"
