Practice, practice, practice. It's the only way to really master a language, and this program does a great job of getting you there without too much pain. Declan's German FlashCards includes audio files and multiple-choice tests to hone your language skills. Its 2,000 words, with audio components, are available for download from the developer's site. You also can import additional lists or create your own. We were impressed that the program allows you to customize lessons to your preference--you can tweak the order and delay the time between cards or whether to include pronunciation practice in your lessons. Multiple-choice quizzes test your knowledge from English to German and back again, and it's not difficult to track progress and spend more time on words that are tricky. We did discover one small bug during installation: the program accidentally creates a false shortcut in the Start menu, which makes you dig into the program folder to launch the program. Overall, this is a robust tool for beginning language learners who want to sprechen German sehr gut.

"Be forewarned - McAfee Identified two worms"

Cons: The download still has problems. While doing the "free" download, McAfee detected two Worms; I aborted immediately and ran a scan. I would have thought these items would have already been addressed with the previous ranking, but it is now over a year later - too bad. Why does it say "tested spyware free" on CNET, when it has problems like this?

I am fluent in German and was looking to see if it would be good for my sons who are talking about taking German at school.

Maybe the version that costs does not have this? But I am not taking the chance or go through a hassle like I did with a different "free to purchase" situation. I just ended up wasting my money on that one and never did get the company to resend a clean copy...

Cons: McAfee Virus Protection pulled up a worm warning for this program. I don't know if it's really a problem, but I wasn't going to risk it.
