Like a Hollywood facade, this freeware media player looks good from the front but lacks substance.
We like AVS DVD Player's clear-cut interface and its support for playlists and bookmarks. We were duly impressed with its claimed ability to transform stereo sound to 5.1 or 7.1 surround, assuming you have such a setup (we didn't test this feature). Unfortunately, performance issues soured the butter on our popcorn. AVS DVD Player took a few minutes to open a DVD.
We also found a minor bug that caused a selected menu item to flicker on top of the movie in full-screen mode. The Rip button made us believe for a moment the program could grab DVDs, but to our disappointment it just linked to a page for the company's for-pay conversion utility. AVS DVD Player isn't a bad option, exactly, but you can find better-performing freeware players that do as much or more.

Version: AVS DVD Player 2.4.4
"It works, that is the main thing."
Pros: It worked playing the DVD I have, where MS Media Player would not. VLC media player would not play the sound.
Cons: The buttons were a little small.
Instalation was not easy. It stalled several times and I had to close it and restart instalation.

Version: AVS DVD Player 2.4.4
Pros: I like the player and the burner quick and easy to use..........But
Cons: If you copy something like a dvd of old family 8mm films to give to the family. The people you give it too have to have the same program downloaded on their computer also. And won't run on a dvd player on a tv

"A nice, simple, player that actually works!"
Pros: This is a nice little player. It is not a resource hog and it works great. A great alternative to the over rated and supposedly "free" Advanced DVD Player. Unlike that player this one actually works and was not designed simply designed to sell you the pro version! On top of all that it also has the ability to do some converting and editing. I had Cyberlink's PowerDVD but lost it when my hard drive died with all the preloaded software on it. So I downloaded this one and I actually like it better than PowerDVD, which was a pretty good program and costs about 70 dollars.
Cons: None that I have found.

"Works great! Better then Windows Media Viewer"
Pros: fast download. Fast install. Simple interface and easy to figure out the controls. My legal store-bought copy of Apocalypse Now caused a "copyright violation" message on Windows media piece of crap (it plays fine on my laptop). Downloaded this player and will keep using it. It only took 15 seconds to start the DVD (not a few minutes). Great Freeware.
