Version: CyberDefender AntiSpyware 2008
"typical security software at retail"
Pros: nice clean install; goo directions
Cons: CyberDefender does not stand out, in my mind, from the majority of security software. There is big money to be made these days from selling all this stuff whether it works well or not.
CNet has edited out some of my comments before regarding these kinds of security software (so I have to take a somewhat vague view as I write this).
What I do know is that I download and install the software and then go out and subject it to a very rigorous set of tests by groups that specialize in getting by and around these software applications.
I tested CyberDefender at 3 locations. It flunked at all of them. At the first stop, it did not pass a single test involving email malware or viruses. And at the other 2, which were a series of tests for flash malware and detection of zero day stuff, it failed two-thirds of the tests.
I personally wouldn't want to own software that did that badly on tests like this (and I do not). But this is what I believe to be a big problem among the large companies that make millions selling stuff like this to folks. It works to a certain point, just like everybody else's. CyberDefender is probably a decent product and as I said, in my opinion, no better or worse than most of what is out there. But what happens when really nasty stuff comes out on the internet, as it does every so often and millions of computers get fried by worms and viruses. Are they going to buy you a new computer now that yours is toast because it could not detect what was coming in through the website you were on, or the email, or it came through the firewall when you were certain that was not possible!
Food for thought

"Installed on Vista to compare these mixed reviews!"
Pros: However, I remain mixed as to how good/bad it really is! In all likelihood, it's a good program for those new to computing but not so for an old warhorse like me! On Vista I recommend creating a system restore point just before installing this app!
Cons: It's true, it is a tough uninstall! Like I said, create a system restore point first. Thats a must! Vista will restore your registry exactly like it was prior to installing this but it's program file still leaves junk behind. Manual delete is a must.
Summary: In fairness to those who love this program, it sells for a good price. It doesn't lag your system & seems to have a good detection rate even though it found zero on my machine, but I hate what it did to my IE. I strongly recommend "MalwareBites" ... read more
