Windows Inspector will analyze and warn you about third-party software installed on your computer. It shows what's running with full details, and highlights any suspicious process. Windows Inspector has a database of common and malicious system applications, which it uses as a filter. The program is helpful in the case of a browser hijacking unwanted BHOs, toolbars, buttons, and context menus. It provides full details of all Internet Explorer-related data, which can be vulnerable to attack from malicious applications. These days more and more sites are installing spyware and adware in one disguised form or another. One of the major areas covered by Windows Inspector is start-up items. Every program that runs automatically has to include itself as a start-up item.

All things considered, this free utility's wealth of PC-maintenance tools makes it a worthy pick for just about all users. Similar to a souped-up version of the Task Manager, Computer Inspector lets you view all running processes on your PC and disable unwanted items. The logically arranged and attractive interface also gives you options for managing browser-helper objects and other Net-related items; uninstalling applications; and managing which programs run on bootup. If Computer Inspector catches a suspicious program, such as a piece of adware, it alerts you by highlighting that entry in red. In our tests, all of the program's tools demonstrated effective performance, and the vast majority of them were a snap to use. Folks seeking a simple way to keep their machine in good condition will find the free Computer Inspector a handy pickup.

  Cons: Spyware Doc. alert...harmful website on the makers of this one. Go with "what's running" instead.

  "Not any good... WITH EVIL SCARE TACTICS"

  Pros: Shows some stuff that is running. Woopie so does ctrl alt del

  Cons: Doesn't say anything about the programs beside what's in the about. Search google? Yeah, i can do that on my own. And this is the damnable, laughable trait... It displays a fake advertising program called bargins in a folder that doesn't exist and the program sure doesn't. Scare tactics? Yes. But, I'm not afraid. I fear this company will now make a dishonest buck.

  Version: Computer Inspector 6.3

  "Spyware!! Requires registration"

  Cons: First it "calls home" and it won't run without letting it. Then I let it through my firewall and up comes a registation with first and last name, email, mailing addresss, and phone # all REQURED fields and it won't let you continue without them being filled in. Did CNET even try this free version??
