Publisher's description of Chilkat ZIP 2 Secure EXE
The ChilkatZip Self-Extractor can safely encrypt the contents of your ZIP file with 128, 192, or 256-bit AES Encryption. To unzip, a user must provide the same password that was used when creating the self-extracting EXE. AES encryption is much stronger than standard ZIP encryption, which is regarded by security experts as being insecure. Chilkat's streaming compression and encryption technology allows the ChilkatZip Self-Extractor to create an EXE from any size ZIP file. The streaming compression and decryption technology also ensures that it will be possible to unzip the archive on your end-user's computer, even if that computer has very little memory. A progress bar is displayed during the unzip process so your end-user can decide whether there is time to get a cup of coffee while his computer is unzipping an especially large ZIP file.

Not that much different from your current ZIP extractor, this clever application converts encrypted ZIP files into self-extracting files. Chilkat ZIP 2 Secure EXE's simply-designed interface offers the generic Windows appeal, though it is comprehensible for beginners. Upon selection of the compressed file, the program quickly converts the file into a self-extracting executable file and immediately applies your selected encryption algorithm. You can choose from 128-, 192-, and 256-bit AES-based encryption algorithms for stronger protection and include passwords to unlock them. Simply double-click the executable and insert your password if you opted to use one, and a file is instantly created in the destination spot of your choice.
Chilkat ZIP 2 Secure EXE doesn't offer much more than the standard extractor, although we like that you can e-mail your EXEs to colleagues. For those looking for an easy way of managing ZIP files and private information, this free program will do the job.

Version: Chilkat ZIP 2 Secure EXE 1.0
Pros: Very easy to use. Very fast.
I'm pretty sure the secure mail I have to send will be safer than open text or an insecure office or winzip protected file (cracks are everywhere on the net).
Just chose my own password and sent the file. No visible messing with keys, or tokens.
Nothing for user at other end to have preinstalled on own machine. They just run the exe.
Cons: Doesn't do the whole thing. You create the zip yourself with another tool (Winzip for most people) and then the EXE from that. It won't direct zip and exe from a doc for instance.
I'll have to take their word for it on the encryption as I've no earthly way of checking it. Still - why wouldn't it be right. The required libraries are out there in software development languages and this an entirely good thing to do with them.
Mmmm. Just realised one bad thing. You just know the incoming EXE is going to get execution blocked on receipt by the receiving mail program and possibly even stripped out if your recipient is in a corporate!
