Publisher's description of Ashampoo Internet Accelerator
From Ashampoo:A slow Internet connection costs time and gets on your nerves. For this reason, taking the time to optimise the settings is almost considered a must particularly since an optimisation in terms of speed doesn't come with any additional cost, neither for a hardware extension nor for the software, as the Ashampoo Internet Accelerator can be used completely free of charge. The program allows a fully automatic setting of the most important parameters. To achieve this, communicating the method used for internet access to the Ashampoo Internet Accelerator on the part of the user is sufficient: analogue modem, ISDN, DSL via LAN cable or cable modem, DSL via wireless LAN, and other LAN connections (no DSL). This system means that the program gets the very last drop of performance out of the internet connection. When using a modem and an ISDL connection, the improvements in performance are particularly noticeable a reason for celebration.
Version 2.1 features new cable modem settings and improves overall performance.

Version: Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2.1
"Not tried it. But I know it... sucks."
Cons: Users... you see? A modem has it's limit. A peak speed. And there is no way in hell is it going to go beyond that limit. Because the average 56kb dial-up modem has a 44kb speed with tweaks. The max you can go up to is a 56kb speed. LOGIC.
The only reason that users are giving it a 5/5 is because, their internet connection is slow due to the mass crap they download. They do not defragment and have no firewall nor AV. That's why they rely on such programs. Tune-up programs is BS. Registry and Disk Defrag are useful. Registry cleaners are just bull. Users who use these programs do not know proper computing and their connection is not reaching peak speeds. Logic. ;)

Version: Ashampoo Internet Accelerator 2.1
Pros: It is indeed free
It works okay (6/10 overall)
I clocked a 10kbps increase on one PC and nothing on the other.
Do a speed test, dl and run this app, test again - if it doesn't work you get your money back. =)
Cons: You have to jump through a hoop or two to get it - but you can then acquire all of the Ashampoo 'free' products with the same credentials, and most of them are worth it.
Look, I honestly recommend Ashampoo's various utilities to average PC users who aren't interested in getting their hands dirty and taking the time to learn the "hows and whys" of tweaking and/or security software but DO want adequate performance.
