This surprising freeware browser offers some helpful features and functions, but trips up on a few display errors. Bluto XT's minimalist interface sports a few tiny buttons that start some common functions and add a few new ones. The application's Help file is as plain as the browser, but uses screen grabs and concise language to fully explain most new functions.

Bluto XT's bare look will appeal to power users who want as much screen space as possible for Web page display. The common functions to move Back, Forward, or Home work as expected. Additional features include an icon-driven pop-up that acts as a quick bookmark to open select pages. An optional sidebar includes news feeds, weather, stock information, a quick Google search, live radio, and a RAM graph. We found that pages loaded quickly. The program accurately displayed most test sites with only the occasional misstep. The program shares Home page and Favorites settings with Internet Explorer, but most settings are easily changed.

Some tool tips and page names incorrectly display, but those were minor annoyances. Speed, extra features, and a low memory footprint make Bluto XT attractive to power users or those looking for a clean interface.

"Nice concept, but falls short."

Pros: Well the browser is lighter than IE7. It uses Windows web rendering engine Trident, or IE7, whatever you call it.

Cons: The major drawback this browser has is that it choked on me, and interfered with my browsing. It's like it is refreshing at a regular interval, or something, and I get stuck temporarily for a short time. This is noticeable when using the scroll bar. Not sure how this got 5 stars, but it does have potential. The minor issues I have with the browser is the favorites menu. Why devote a whole toolbar for that? I don't know why most browsers include this as I never use it. Just a simple drop down menu from the Favorites button is good enough for me.
