- "Make viruses walk the plank with Avast"
Avast Professional Edition skillfully scans your PC and several programs for viruses, although configuring it is not for the faint of heart.
Immediately after installation, the program asks if you want to schedule an antivirus scan of your local hard drives at system start. You'll notice two icons in your system tray after installing Avast: one to configure the functions and another to activate the virus recovery database.
Well-designed, Avast scans executables, inbound and outbound e-mails, and P2P programs such as Kazaa, Limewire, and Morpheus. Instant messages received from several messenger programs are inspected for harmful viruses as well. The program was able to block URLs and common file operations such as renaming and deleting. We appreciated the sensitivity adjusters to get protection to desired levels including normal, high, or customized.
We must say this application did slow down our system while surfing and using other programs. Many of its configurations require intermediate know-how or better. Fortunately, it has a generous 60-day trial. Don't let the steep learning curve turn you off; Avast safeguards your system at optimum levels.

Version: Avast Professional Edition 4.8.1201.80611
"It may delete files from System Restore and back-ups!"
Pros: The Avast 4.8 maybe is one of the best AV I have tried, specially the deep scan inside Outlook (or OE) single messages. But it requires your attention regarding your system restore points and HD image backups.
Cons: First thing I did after installing the Avast was a full deep scan in all drives. I was not used to it and never saw an AV to scan your windows restore points and inside Norton Ghost image files. So, what happened is that it found some files and MTF Table changes as viruses. As I run with 2 HDs, the second one contains all data and Image Back-up. After scanning you need to pay attention if it finds files considered harmful before deleting. I said "OK, delete everything" and was a mess. Never run deep scan on to your back-ups. The machine did not restarted properly after cleaned and, as the files inside windows system restore and Ghost Image were also deleted, I was not able to boot, use system restore or Norton Ghost. I ended up finding an older back-up at an external drive, restored the machine with Norton Ghost, switched the HD0 and then I was able to restore my data. Just that. Be careful when scanning system restore points and Image backups. Besides that, it is a great product.
