The Mac OS X Modem Update resolves a rare issue in which a built-in modem cannot dial up. You may see the message: Internet Connect could not open the communications device. After updating or installing Mac OS X 10.2, some Macintosh computers cannot dial out via their built-in modems.

You may see these three symptoms: Internet Connect gives this alert message when you attempt to dial up: Internet Connect could not open the communications device; The Internet Connection Log contains this entry: Failed to open /dev/cu.modem: Device busy; The modem works normally if you start up the computer from Mac OS 9. If you have not experienced the symptoms, you do not need to download the Mac OS X Modem Update. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.

  Apple OS X Modem Update

  didn't solve my modem problems- already included in later versions Tiger?

  Pros: It would be nice if it helped for the irritating problems with my G-5 Imac with the external modem hanging up frequently, even tried replacing the modem. Finally giving up Cox Cable San Diego's digital phone service, trying their lame economy hi-speed internet again, see if it will work well this time around.

  Cons: That it didn't help my problem, at times had to slow the modem down to version 34 or so to get modem to quit disconnecting.
