From Ami Soft: Amiglobe 2005 is a world atlas and database that enables you to navigate the world map and obtain information on 237 countries and entities. Click on a country and you can see information regarding the geography, history, population data, government, economy, transportation, and military of that particular country. You also can view the country's flag and hear a sound file of its national anthem.

Don't know the difference between southern Georgia and former Soviet Georgia? This well-designed and easy-to-use geography program beats flipping through a dog-eared atlas or spinning a dusty globe. Amiglobe 2005 includes a wealth of details about each of the world's countries, including population figures and population density, gross national product, languages, national anthem, and flags. Country information is pulled from the latest version (2004) of the CIA World Fact Book, with additional information culled from Wikipedia (which, while a generally reliable source, should be fact checked). Country names and capitals (and other cities) are transliterated from the country's native language, which can be confusing. Multiple-choice tests give you the option of identifying a country by shape, flag, or capital. The only hiccup we encountered during testing was the program crashed when we tried to move the program window too quickly or too high on the screen. Overall, this is a useful tool that could be a boon for students or curious globetrotters.

  Doesn't Live Up to the Hype

  Cons: In comparison to programs like Encarta this program just doesn't pass muster. The maps are rudimentary and the navigation feels clunky instead of intuitive. Perhaps I'll come back after a time and see if its improved any but for now I'll stick to what I know works.
