Amadeus II is designed to allow users to process sounds on a Macintosh. It provides tools for facilitating the reduction of background noise and the generation of precise sonograms and spectrum analyses, and it includes many standard features, such as filters and echo. It also allows users to synthesize sounds from a library of waveforms. It supports direct-to-disk capabilities, multiple undo functionality, and multiple scraps. It also offers full MP3 support (using the LAME encoding engine), a function for joining several files, and crack-searching functions.

When Macromedia released SoundEdit 16 back in the day, it was a breakthrough in audio-production applications. That legacy resonates today in applications such as Amadeus II, which closely follows SoundEdit's functionality and usability. Amadeus II can open a variety of file types, recently adding support for MP3. We like the extensive selection of sound-analysis tools such as the oscilloscope and sonogram. We also like the support for VST plug-ins, which extends the functionality by leaps and bounds. Editing audio files is quick. The interface relegates most tasks to pull-down menus rather than cluttering the work space with vague icons. Overall, Amadeus II is a perfect choice for anyone looking for an elegant audio editor.
