From AOL: You don't have to be an America Online member to use AOL Instant Messenger, a program that allows Internet users to communicate via private text messages. AOL Instant Messenger indicates when your friends, family members, or business colleagues are online. It has the ability to combine AOL's Buddy List and Instant Message features, enabling users to send and respond to messages.

New in version 4.7: Friendly Name support is here - no more hard-to-remember names for your ICQ or Mobile users on your Buddy List! Now, when you add an ICQ or Mobile user to your Buddy List, you will have an opportunity to create a more familiar Friendly Name for that user. You can also edit existing ICQ or Mobile users on your Buddy List to add a Friendly Name to their entry. Once you've created a Friendly Name for an ICQ or Mobile user, you will see their Friendly Name, when they're online, in your Buddy List, Instant Messages with them, and other places in AIM.

  AOL Instant Messenger

  We Need 5.9 For Mac...

  Pros: Alright, I'm just going to give a little starter here. I have both an iMac G5 and a PC. Now, I rate AIM 5.9 for Windows extremely highly. With my personal experience, I absolutely despised AIM Triton and didn't like AIM 6.0 at all. 5.9 is by far the best AIM product out there right now.

  Cons: AIM 4.7 for Mac is supposed to look like 5.9 for PC. However, it doesn't function like it at all. It is absolutely one of the worst items that I have ever tested and used. It is very unstable, crashes way too often, loads very slowly, is annoying to use, default settings are awful, and buddy list is really odd.

  Please take my advice and use iChat instead!!

  Decent, but unstable.

  Pros: It's easy to use and it's the most familiar client for instant messaging.

  Cons: This program is horribly unstable. I run OS X 10.4.3 and it crashes far too often to be of any real use. It's extremely irritating.

  Just another review..

  Pros: Everyone uses AOL Messenger.

  Cons: I run Mac OS X 10.4.7 and the messenger crashes without even allowing me to say HEY to a friend. But when i get real lucky! I can squeeze in a sentance or two before it crashes on me. So basically... I recommend the user to be a really fast typer to be doing what i'm doing :)

  Pros: Nothing good about the product its self. But I do need to say that a lot of people use an AIM account, so it is good that it supports that.

  Cons: There are better applications that support AIM. For a bunch of features like audio/video conferncing and a nice user interface, use iChat. It also supports Bonjour and Jabber, which you can use to connect to any client (but it's a pain to manage.) There's also Adium, which is compatable with just about any messaging account and has a highly customizeable appearance. It does lack Audio/Video chat though. You really should be using one of those 2.
