Publisher's description of IconX
From Stardock:
IconX turbo-charges your Windows desktop icons. It can insert shadows, make icons bigger, make icons zoom up when you mouse over them, and even change their color based on what you're doing. Version 1.1 adds the ability to change your icon text labels to have backgrounds which look nicer and add better readability.

Editor's review of IconX
More an icon-theme tweaker than an editor, IconX offers a modest set of features at an affordable price. Using the bare-bones tabbed interface, you can assign predefined themes or manually adjust icon sizes, brightness, contrast, transparency, and shadow. Other options include the ability to alter the font, size, and color of icon labels. The program can also trigger sounds and special effects on mouseover, click, and double-click events. However, the visual effects are a bit disappointing--they're just different varieties of expanding circles. Also, note that IconX can't change individual icons or create new ones. It applies tweaks to every icon at once, and the Windows Display Properties control panel provides some of this functionality already. Also, the shareware version disables animations and doesn't save changes between start-ups. However, for those who need to configure their desktops down to the last detail, IconX's $10 price shouldn't be too much to pay.

Great with Object Desktop

Pros: It makes desktop icons look a whole lot better.
Cons: Has a few bugs. Not really worth the price. I recommend getting Object Desktop at stardock.com because it includes this and many other programs that completely change your desktop.

What it says on the tin

Pros: It lets you fiddle with the settings individually.
There is no charge for it.
It supports many more image types than Window's normal offering.
If you download object dock then the images from that can be used, no more downloads
Cons: The icon downloading is a pain in the neck- i'll never get to grips with it
The interface is annoyingly improveable- I want to re-program it.
It doesn't automaticsly run at startup, but instead you must copy the .exe into C:\Documents and Settings\name of user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

Excellent Icon Enhancement
by: tast13
on 02-Mar-2006 11:39:43 PM
Pros: IconX makes your icons configurable and animated. I currently have mines set at 48x48 Pixels and they smoothly get bigger ( 64x64) when moused over. Once you use the program it's completely addictive to have your icons respond to your mouse.
Cons: The only negative I can find with IconX is it's inability to extract the icon from some programs such as iTunes. This is easily fixed however by grabbing one from the Object dock library on wincustomize.com.

ccapp.exe errors and a .dll error
by: saintlucy
on 19-Jun-2006 08:38:21 AM
Pros: Like bigger icons. Had the entire Stardock suite on old pc.
Cons: When shuting down computer received two errors capp.exe and a .dll error. removed the iconx from computer and the errors went away.
Had this on old pc and always had these error messages that I couldn't figure out how to get rid of. On new pc it showed up and so uninstalled. Part of the reason I purchased a new pc was these annoying stardock errors (that and increased ram and better video card).

IconX
Great Program!
by: Phil Malcolm
on 25-Oct-2006 06:03:46 PM
Pros: This program allows you to edit the way your icons look, and has lots of great options and terrific icon formats to choose from. You can make your icons grow, you can make them extremely big, you can make them cartoonish, or even add sounds and animations to your icons. Overall a really solid program.
Cons: Has only 5 or 6 different "themes" for your icons, and you can not add your own sounds or animations to your icons, only the ones they provide.
