AVG Internet Security is complete security protection against all of the most serious Internet threats, including viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware, hackers, and spam. Compatible with Windows Vista, AVG Internet Security is light on system resources, unobtrusive with no aggravating pop-ups.

The powerful AVG Resident Shield provides maximum protection by scanning every file opened, executed, or saved. It also prevents the opening or executing of infected files and provides silent/fast protection. Version 8.0.87 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

  • "AVG's new suite not all that"

AVG Internet Security 8.0 has many new features including Linkscanner technology, which AVG Technologies acquired with its recent purchase of Exploit Prevention Labs. Overall, the product falls flat as an Internet security suite.

Missing from the suite is adequate antiphishing protection beyond e-mail blocking. AVG Internet Security 8.0 flags malicious Web sites, however, unlike the standalone version of Linkscanner there is no additional information provided about a threat. We also found the AVG suite to be resource heavy and produced false positives.

AVG installs Yahoo as the default search engine in up to two locations within your Internet browser, depending upon your installation choices. We were able to download and install AVG Internet Security 8.0 on a Dell XPS machine running Windows XP SP2 with no difficulty and without rebooting. If you are upgrading from a previous version of AVG, you must uninstall that version first before installing version 8.0.

AVG provides a fully functional 30-day trial. There are searchable FAQs on AVG's Web site with a handful of useful questions and answers. There is also a downloadable 172-page PDF users' manual that lacks a comprehensive index. AVG also doesn't provide telephone technical support or a free online user's forum.

"I Don't Trust AVG/Grisoft. The Editor must be high 4 Stars. WTF"

by Software Tester on May 26, 2008

    Pros: " NOTHING "

Cons: I had AVG/Grisoft Anti-spyware installed on my computer I purchased Panda IS 2008. Panda would not install unless AVG Anti-spyware was uninstalled. I uninstalled AVG Anti-spyware but did not remove the setup folder and file. A couple months later I did a online Kaspersky Anti-virus scan just for a second opinion. When Kaspersky online Anti-virus was scanning my computer it found the AVG Anti-spyware folder and setup file and marked it as a THREAT. When two of the best Anti-viruses single out the same program how can you honsetly trust anything from AVG/Grisoft ?? I dont work for Panda or Kaspersky I know they are both good anti-viruses I do like Panda better though. So try Panda or Kaspersky they are much better and tell AVG/Grisoft to stick it.

"Note to AVG: We are not all blithering idiots."

by owlhollow on May 4, 2008

Pros: -I have Vista, our other two computers have XP.

-No problems installing AVG 8 on Vista or on the bare-bones XP that I use for work.

-The GUI is much prettier now.

-Old firewall settings from AVG 7 were transfered straight to 8, so there was no messing about with reconfiguring the firewall. (The same does not hold true with the anti-virus program and exceptions, unfortunately.)

    -The scans seem snappy.

-It's affordable when you are upgrading - The three-pack is a fabulous deal for a software upgrade. (Obviously, it's not affordable if it doesn't work correctly.)

-Without Web Shield and Link Checker, it seems to run fine. (I haven't tried set up exceptions for scans yet.)

Cons: -AVG tells YOU what you need and want, and if you insist on doing it your way, they will nag you with an error state:

    **Lack of customizable options.**

If there is a component that you do not need or want - Like Web Shield, Link Checker, IM, Email, etc. - you have to know that you do not want that component *before* you use the software and decline to install it. That is the only way to keep AVG from showing in the error state at all times if you do not wish to run that component.

-Web Shield and Link Checker are intrusive and annoying. They will slow your computer to a dead crawl. If you are already using Firefox with extensions, it over-rides Firefox leaving at least one great FX extension dead in the water.

-Our XP laptop could not successfully install AVG. Every attempt produced an error message. Ended up with a different anti-virus program until we hear from AVG tech support. *Five* days and counting in our wait for a reply.

-Tech support and customer service. I've used the paid version of AVG for years. I've always been happy with their customer support, even though it's limited to email. It's prompt and they actually read your email and respond. I think they are overwhelmed right now. It took *six days* to get a response from them. I'm patient, but my understanding has limits.

-This has potential to be good software, but it was released too soon. They should have left it in Beta.

    "Slows down any PC"

by El Cacique on April 11, 2008

Pros: It is loaded with a full arsenal of protection. The interface is a welcome improvement to it's predecesor v7.5. Updates are fast.

Cons: I installed this on my two desktops (XP Home Edition SP2 & Windows Vista Home Premium) and on my laptop (Vista Home Premium). All three were significantly slowed down, at times almost to a stop. I can only think that this is due to the link scanner. I ended up uninstalling it and going back to version 7.5 which still gives my systems excellent protection but uses little memory resources. I guess this time the saying "if it is not broken, don't fix it" applies.

    "Love it"

    by nissanman55 on April 17, 2008

Pros: Like how it looks. It works great and has much more protection then the 7.5 sucurity suite. My computer has not slowed any and have had no problems as stated in some of the other reviews. They may have other problems causing all the problems on there computer.

Cons: Setting it up could be made easier, but not all that difficult.

"Thank you for a functionality but not control freakish!"

by Wendy Merritt on July 11, 2008

Pros: I previously had Norton...what a nightmare. AVG is less expensive, less intrusive and just better all the way around. Very user friendly.
