Keep Version 7.5
Pros: Good Looking User Interface.
Cons: I have been useing Avg for quite a while but this version is really Disappointing. The user Interface looks good, but NOT User Friendly. The automatic update doesn't work at least on my machine(XP Pro).I have to do it manually at 10:00/PM. I have it set to scan at 11:00/PM I have it set that way because with this version it takes THREE Hours and Thirty Minutes to Complete the scan. Version 7.5 only took One Hour and Thirty Minutes. The Tray Icon looks like a child designed it. E-Mail scanner only works for Thirty Days. This Version is a BIG DISAPOINTMENT. I think I'll Try Avast Home Edition. Come On Grisoft GET IT TOGETHER.
BIG DISAPOINTMENT
I agree with you. I think they (Grisoft) are no longer committed to provide FREE anti-virus. Anyway, we still have free anti-virus competitors.
8.0 is still the best of the best
You've got to go into the advanced settings of the tools in order to make this new 8.0 work quickly and to download updates. Remember, you must click APPLY after each change.
i agree, stay with version 7.5 it is fast and simple
keep 7.5 it is the best, it doesn't slow down your system.....the main reason people have loved avg all these years is because it was light weight, wouldn't slow down the computer, now this 8.0 slows it down...............Keep 7.5 everyone
Agree, Keep Version 7.5
I, too, am disappointed. I've used 7.5 for a year and felt confident I was protected and liked the interface. Since downloading 8.0, I am unable to open attached emails inside if emails in Outlook '03, SP3. I can open other attachments; .wmv, .pps, .gif, etc, but not if they are in the form of an email (envelope icon). Bad thing is, I don't know how to go back to the free 7.5. About.com suggest you build your own software suite and use Avira and Avast is the third choice. See:*****
Free... I guess you get what you pay for....
VERY GOOD, AWESOME SOFTWARE,RECOMMEND IT.
Everything works perfect and software is effective.
AVG GOODBYE
WELL IF you have the 7.5 version of AVG on the end of MAY 31 you will not get no more update after that date I guess I will dump AVG and go with AVAST..was nice till it last...
BIG DISAPOINTMENT
Everytime after update at startup it needs restart, this wasn't necessary with version 7.5
If you want to reinstall 7.5
Go to brothersoft website com not co uk and type in AVG 7.5
hope this helps you

AVG says e-mail scanner limitation is a rumor
I just checked AVG free website and found their following comment dated May 6, 2008.:
Important information about e-mail scanning
Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet, AVG Free 8.0 does not include any "trial" or "time-out" functionality. Every option provided in the program is fully functional for the life of the product.
Slower scan? No way! Great version actually!
Just compare how many files and archives get scanned first. Then also check if you can use your system while scanning - version 8 by default automatically reduces scan priority if other apps are running. If you want to finish the scan quickly, set it to fast scan!
And then compare the results with others and with 7.5. It actually detects more, you even get anti-spyware in it! And removes everything.
I went back to McAfee
AVG........not so great. Avast was worse though!
PATHETIC !
To download dot com,
We can't submit new user reviews about this software, and apparantly there have been over 80 million downloads through download dot com since April 23rd of this year...
I don't think even the US army have access to that sort of bandwidth. 4 million downloads per day @ nearly 50Mb per file since 23rd April 2008...
You must be off your heads. Unless of course, someone has held a gun to yours'.
HOW DARE YOU con us.
Don't use it. Don't download it..
Andy.
keep 7.5!
I agree 7.5 was awesome, but the new and supposedly improved 8.0 slows down, even freezing the computer. Makes my fast DSL look like dial up. The scans dont happen when they should. Are slow and laborious and there is no option to stop the scan. Even when you turn off AVG in the toolbar, it continues to slow things down. Quite annoying. I also went to avast and am very happy with it.
AVAST is worse than AVG!!!
AVG 8 suddenly wants to take over your entire computer and where you go. It's better than AVAST as that wiped out everything virus and everything Microsoft thinking it was spyware or malware. Tho I don't like AVG 8 it's a whole lot better than AVAST!!!
update download scan data base
Hi Baldy 2, I cannot even get the manual download to work. I downloaded this 20.03.80 downloaded update data base six days later and since the (26.03.08) the manual download does not work for me.
avg's advanced settings
I'm in the computer repair business and have hundreds of clients that have installed the new free avg 8 into their systems and I've also installed over 50 of them and have yet to find any FREE avg installations that have this 30day email problem. And update problems? I've noticed that many problems are fixed by reconfiguring the settings under the tools part then advanced settings. AVG is still the best! BUT REMEMBER...you can't just install it then leave it be, you must configure it.
Huh?
Really man, the tray icon? Who cares as long as it does the job! The reason it takes longer is that it is looking for WAY more threats (i.e., spyware, malware, adware, cookies, and OS changes). And as far as the email scanner rumor is concerned it simply is that - a rumor - probably started by competing products. Here is a quote from AVG's website: "Important information about e-mail scanning,
Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet, AVG Free 8.0 does not include any "trial" or "time-out" functionality. Every option provided in the program is fully functional for the life of the product. Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0" You do the math. I am a technology consultant in business for 13 years and have been recommending AVG to my clients for more than 3 years now. Knowing what I know about other free products and the big commercial antivirus products out there, AVG is by far the best in terms of resource usage, threat detection, price, and update support. Use something else at your peril.
Keep Version 7.5
Hey Baldy2...how do/did you keep version 7.5? When you installed their new release 8.0.1??, it uninstalled 7.5! I learned the same thing you did with all the short-comings (Come On Grisoft GET IT TOGETHER), and wished I could return to 7.5 but now the installation tells me it's outdated, I continue the install, then can't get my virus update feature to work and something else, I can't remember. I've uninstalled the 7.5 and attempted to reinstall it again, and still seems broken because the install file is outdated, like 11/08/06.
I wish I could get 7.5 reinstalled. What in the world happened to our wonderful AVG Free for personal users, especially since we've been onboard for over 10years!
Excellent
Version 8.01 is a lot better then the old version. Everything works great for me, automatic updates work fine.
This is a huge improvement over the old one. Good Work Grisoft.
