Email scanner only available for 30 days

by: UKposter on 30-Apr-2008 01:39:09 AM

Pros: I've been a long time user of AVG Free, from well before Cnet had it on their site and I asked many times why it was not here. I've always found it to be a very good anti-vir, it's almost always caught bugs that have sneaked past my anti-spyware defences, the few that did get past were bugs that more specialist progs like TrojanHunter managed to deal with. So I've been happy with this great free anti-vir, until NOW....

Cons: ....the fact that the email scanner is only available for 30 days for free is enough to make me look at alternatives and to drop this program's rating right down to 1 star. So many bugs can arrive via email that less security conscious people may send, often inadvertently, that it's not worth having this big hole in my defences. I've gone back to ver 7.5 and will check out avast or avira again as my free anti-vir applications. The sooner the better as I'm getting really fed up with the pop up from AVG that came in with 7.5's last update, another move on AVG's part that's losing them a long time user and advocate of their products.

I agree entirely with UKposter-The people at Grisoft are forgetting what made them so popular in the first place...I'm just about to download Avast.

Nothing expires after 30 days

CNET have got the free edition confused with the trial edition. You can check on AVG's site or forum if you dont believe me.

wrong - e-mail scanner does not expire !

by: vambo8 on 01-May-2008 02:50:32 AM

There is a confusion here... The full TRIAL version will expire. the FREE version will not. Please check the download versions carefully as the site steers you to the paid & trial versions.

No limitations to e-mail scanner per AVG

by: El Cacique on 14-May-2008 03:58:24 PM

I just checked AVG free website and found their following comment dated May 6, 2008.:

Important information about e-mail scanning

Contrary to rumors circulating on the Internet, AVG Free 8.0 does not include any "trial" or "time-out" functionality. Every option provided in the program is fully functional for the life of the product.

7.5 virus protector

I hate 8.01 AVG protector. I had 7.5. Can you still find it to download? M. Dodson

Download dot com got their facts wrong and I believed them!!

To abilone71, you can get old versions at filehippo dot com, it's a really good site for old versions of all sorts of software.

Sorry about the confusion, I read on this site that the email scanner was only available in the Free version for 30 days, I made the mistake of believing everything that download.com posted in their review, now edited, but I don't get the opportunity on here to edit my post and correct the confusion I helped spread, sorry people!

I did download 8.0 and tried it for a few days, there were some update issues that I encountered, not installing properly, even after trying restarts, as well as downloading them again, and some of the settings would revert to the default settings. I tried Avira and Avast and didn't find them to my liking particularly, I'd used both before and felt the same then too. I then used the free MacAfee that I get with my ISP, too slow and domineering, so I'm back using AVG Free 7.5 and probably will do so until it's no longer supported, hopefully that's the end of this year at least. Maybe by then ver 8. x will have sorted out the early bugs and tempt me!

AVG 8.0 is *****

by: bogue71 on 25-May-2008 12:53:36 PM

I liked 7.5. I installed 8.0 and it was a memory hog! It must have been using nearly 100,000 K. Everything froze up. I rebooted several times and finally had to enter Safe Mode to uninstall it.

I'm now using Advast.
