Ad-Aware improves for 2008

This year's major update to user favorite Ad-Aware looks to be more of a course correction from some of the missteps in the 2007 version. The adware and malware detection engine has undergone a significant overhaul, resulting in faster scan times, and the interface has been changed.

Ad-Aware 2008 offers several improvements, including skins such as this dark-themed one.

The changes to the detection and removal engine will be noticeable to long-time Ad-Aware users, with Lavasoft touting faster scan times and better rootkit detection. New users should notice that the app performs faster than integrated antivirus and antimalware programs, and that's because only the paid version of Ad-Aware comes with the new antivirus engine.

That's great news for users of Ad-Aware Pro and Ad-Aware Plus, but it's the free version that has 292 million downloads and that we're looking at today.

The app's updater is no longer permanently on, and instead runs in your system's background only if you activate it--eliminating one of my big problems with last year's model. The interface improvements include six skins, cleanly designed tabbed navigation for each of the program's main functions, and easy-to-see red X's and green check marks to indicate a features status.

Besides the antivirus integration, other features disabled in the free version include the realtime Ad-Watch guard, heuristics scanning, the scheduler, and plug-ins. Although Ad-Aware detects and removes malware with ease, I hesitate to recommend it as anything more than a secondary detection engine considering that many free competitors offer more features and similar, if not stronger, levels of effectiveness.

So since you no longer recommend AdAware free except as a secondary app,
Please give us your preferred free programs in this category that we can use as our primary malware fighting tool.
Thanks

i prefer not to have multiple real time security programs running. i'm rarely in a situation where i need it. ccleaner gets most of the cookies, thats about all i ever get. but i do keep a-squared free, it has found a few things that have gotten past esets. my second would be superantispyware. but i picked up spysweeper for $14 a few months ago, so thats my choice for now. it doesn't start up with windows or run in the back ground. and it does keep my start up programs in check. i have spyware doctor, i picked it up for $19, but it slows things down and even if you turn it off, it still runs in the back ground. but it is the best stand alone antispyware program, if you want a slow computer.

What I generally do is I don't have antispyware/antiadware installed on my computer. I only have a registry cleaner, cleaning tool, firewall and antivirus running. However, after every few weeks I install antiadware etc and once I'm done I promptly uninstall 'em. Here's my picks: http://techqi.blogspot.com/2008/01/miscellaneous-security-software-part-1.html. Nowadays most antivirus software catch ads too; check out http://avscan.blogspot.com.

adaware 2008 was a decent program back in the day, but it has fallen way behind in the war against spyware... I just installed it to try again and it has a signature file of a little over 200 thousand sigs... After scanning it found a few cookies, that is all... Most of today's antispyware apps like a squared free for example have over 1 million signatures... I have removed it already, cause it still bites the big Wiener... My choices for free effective removal and prevention are, 1. spyware blaster 2. Spybot Search & Destroy 3. A Squared Free 4. AVG Antispyware Free 5. CCleaner plus any good antivirus program you choose... if you want on guard protection for free then use either spyware doctor free from the google pack or spyware terminator...
