PCLive offers a free security suite

PCLive.com, a service offered by SecurityCoverage Inc., is attempting to upstage security giants Symantec and McAfee by offering a complete suite of security tools for your desktop--for free. Included within the basic PCLive Security package is a firewall, the open source ClamAV antivirus product, antispyware, a pop-up blocker, plus system cleaner (removes old temp files). PCLive will also check for the latest Microsoft Windows updates that haven't yet been applied to your PC. For a mere $4.95 a month, PCLive Premium Security includes all the basic PCLive Security along with Web content filtering, parental controls, disk maintenance and 24-7 live technical support. SecurityCoverage also offers users of their free PCLive service instant 24-7 technical support for a flat fee of $49.95 per session.

How does it work? OK. The ClamAV product is designed for UNIX and Linux systems. It hasn't been independently tested by Windows-based antivirus testing labs. Also we found that PCLive runs three active processes on your desktop. A couple of times, for no apparent reason, the PCLMonitorService process consumed up to 53 percent of our system resources, considerably slowing our test PC.

Our biggest complaint is a lack of detail on what's going on under the hood, such as a listing of what temp files, viruses, and spyware were removed. Upon installation, PCLive scanned and removed viruses and spyware from our test PC--without telling us what it removed. While there is an e-mail report of what the product has done on your PC, we'd like a little input on what's done on our computer. Same thing happened with an announcement that several hundred temp files had been removed. Not that we want to see every temp file, but we'd like to know in advance and approve any actions.

There are five tabs: Status, Security Scans, Settings, Forum support, and Upgrade. Opening the PCLive settings page is frustrating. There is no contextual Help, no Help file at all, meaning, it's hard to figure out what the setting options you have. Under firewall settings we checked "stealth mode." Other than getting a pop-up explaining that we might not be able to visit certain sites, there was no additional information on what "stealth mode" might or might not do. If you do tweak any of the PCLive settings, you can either save and you can close the app, but you can't intuitively get back to the main interface page.

Back on the Status tab, after choosing to update all the components, PCLive continued to show that we weren't fully updated. A second update proved successful, but that was a lucky guess on our part.

Should you decide to remove PCLive, there is an uninstall option on the All Programs menu. After a reboot, we found no traces of PCLive remaining on our test system.

Not yet ready

I tested this software for nearly two days and direct supports from them. I have to say their software is not yet ready and suitable for any home or small business users to used yet. What i find are

First: The firewall automatically block the ip and you cant add any program into the safe/trust profile to prevent any accidently block any incoming or outgoing ports.

Second: There is no custom spyware scanning feature in the option except only anti-virus.

Thrid: The real-time scanning always hit 100% cpu usage all the time if you happen to click any folders. The longer it takes to scan if you go to any music or video folders. This is because Clamwin itself has not includes real time protection until now as it normally perform scanning already use 100% cpu usage.

I decided to pull the plug. I had actually no problem with the firewall or spyware mention above because i can wait for better update. But the real time protection is too heavily uses 100% cpu usage and it takes too long to scan and its very hard perform any program running or even played music properly. If they were able to lower down the use of cpu usage it might be better.

Heavy system user.

I found that the download took a lot of time, and when installed used a heavy amount of resources. Like others, I am not sure what has been removed. Also found it slowed down the shut down sequence for my windows laptop.
I have now un-installed the program and reverted to Avant.

I am the CEO of SecurityCoverage, Inc., owners of PCLive Security and PCLive.com. I wanted to take a minute and respond to all your comments and acknowledge the issues you've encountered. Our goal is to make a user friendly security product for the average non-tech consumer. We have purposely tried to remove the decision making process (not to hide anything that is happening) but to create less burden on the consumer. Anything that is quarantined is fully visible and can be restored should you choose to. Also the firewall can be easily configured and we now have onine documentation build into the console and website that provides details on how.

We realize there have been a few issues with CPU utilization and shut down procedues and have released a new version today that can be downloaded. We are also offering free supported remote installatin and a free 24/7 product support license. Please consider giving us a try again and providing direct feedback. We take all comments very serios and want to provide a great product with superior support services.

Mr CEO:

Your product is a piece of Junk..Worthless..not User Freindly.

Go back to your Drawing board, and start again. Then come back when the INSANE bugs are worked out and then Market this Crap again

Give this a chance.

People don't realize that this program is in its infancy and yes, it will contain bugs. Any program out there that is released isn't smooth as butter at first, if they ever get to that point. I'm personally hoping that this program becomes a real competitor to the other big PC security companies.

Works Great
by mwiebelhaus October 24, 2007 3:37 PM PDT
Ive encountered no problems except with the firewall. It wasn't exactly a problem but It isn't very easy to configure when I was installing my network printer driver. So I shut it off and turned windows firewall back on it works good for what I need because I'm using a router so I don't really need it. I tested this on a clean installation of windows so far everybody saying it locked up your computer.....well it was probably already screwed up to begin with. I ran a scan while I went to school and it worked fine but it didn't say what it removed or anything....but hey if its removing viruses and spy ware why do we need to complain about that?
