America Online (AOL)

Version: 7.0

It is ok.

AOL 7.0 is only good is good in certain circumstances, but I find it's browser easy to use. Connection speed is the same for me with all the ISPs I tried, however, AOL did disconnect much more than the others I tried. Infact so much, it was annoying, so I switched to a cheaper ISP that provides a MORE RELIABLE DIAL-UP SERVICE! $23.90 is pretty expensive I say, but I guess it is the browser you are paying for. Not many other ISPs offer an alternative browser. In AOL's case, I think the browser is great. Extremely intuitive. The only problem I had with AOL 7.0 is the prevailent disconnects.

SurfSecret PestPatrol

Version: 4.2.38

Great product.

PestPatrol comes with many detection engines for cookies, keyloggers, and real-time spyware active in the physical memory. While it does not differiate between malicious spyware from spyware that is benign, it detects almost everything that can be potentially be spyware. When you get the scan results, you must look over which programs you are willing to allow entry to you computer, but PestPatrol will find it including trojans. I think what makes PestPatrol better than free applications such as Ad-aware, and Spybot, is the real-time detection shield which essentially works like a anti-virus constantly monitoring the computer for malware. It PestPatrol detects spyware in a application you are opening, it will halt the execution, and warn you. Then you decide you want to delete, or stop the process. It's not as memory intensive as Webroot's Spy Sweeper program, which is good. Free version of PestPatrol doesn't delete anything, it only detects. Overall I found it to be a good program.

Free Download Manager

Version: 1.45

Best one I tried.

Free Download Manager allows you to easily organize your downloads. You can specify which filetype will go to where with ease. Also, I found this to be much better than Fresh Download Manager, because it actually intergrates with the operating system. In my case, Windows XP Home Edition. I downloaded SP2 with this download manager. A huge 266MB download on dial-up. Yes it does resume broken downloads, but foremost it does intergrate well with the intended platform, which most had a problem doing. You can simply click on a download link, and Free Download Manager will pick it up. It doesn't even need to be open for it for detect download clicks. You don't need to right-click and save the URL for download. It's easy and fully automated. I use this now, because it's the only one I tried that actually works the way it was intended to.

Opera (Java)

Version: 7.54

Excellent browser.

Secure, fast, and with many features. Browser of 2004 without a doubt. This thing is not completely free, but look what you get as a result of that. Very well made browser. I encountered no bugs and it has good customer support. I am have tried Mozilla, and Firefox, but I am not the type to go fetch plug-ins for what I consider basic features like tabbed browsing. Tabbed browsing is already standard, this is not the old Internet Explorer days where you browse with one window and open another website, but that is not the sole reason why I like and use Opera. It's because of it's quality. Where you are undoubtly going to run into some problems with Firefox with extensions and such, Opera has everything that I need. Opera is a set it and forgot it type of browser with very little if no setbacks at all. It's the best standalone in my opinion.

Yahoo Messenger

Version: 6.0

Still buggy.

This messenger is retarded. Literally. I have to tell it to open a chat room twice before one actually does. The same goes for the voice chat feature. 6.0 still has all your wonderful booter and crash exploits that people can run to make Yahoo unpleasant. The program is noticeably slow than the previous version. The installer uses trickery. It makes you think you can choose what bundled programs to install. You think you getting a clean and custom install, but wrong, it still installs things you don't want. How clever of you Yahoo. I hope you go under for this. Now my computer behaves akwardly.
