Kurlo

Version: 1.3

It's Okay But ..........

Pros: I was looking for a stand alone envelope printer so I wouldn't have to open Word to use it's envelope printer and so I could just select an address without having to type it in each time.... This program does this and more

! In fact it does everything it claims to do and it's free!

Cons: BUT..... Unlike the envelope printer built into Microsoft Word this program does not print the "Delivery Point Barcode".

Sygate Personal Firewall

Version: 5.6

I Like this better than Zone Alarm

Pros: I like this better than Zone Alarm because it doesn't keep telling me that a program is trying to access the web and asking me for permission. I had Zone Alarm on one of my other PCs and Sygate on one. This time I'm sticking with sygate for a 3rd older PC with Windows 98. It needs a firewall before I give it to my nephew. And I'm getting rid of Zone Alarm on my other PC.

Cons: None. Some commenters here have said that it doesn't work for them; but if you look close in most cases there is a reason for that. For instance many are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2 which includes it's own firewall. If they are running 2 firewalls at once this can cause problems. It doesn't always cause problems but it can and only one firewall should be used at a time. I have to wonder if the reason it didn't work for them was because they didn't disable the Windows XP firewall included with Service Pack 2?

Simple File Shredder

Version: 2.5

Not Able to Depend on This

Pros: It is simple to use once you learn your way around. Simply drag and drop files after clicking the icon for drag and drop mode or shred files from various other sources like the recycle bin, etc.

Cons: It didn't work for me? I was using it to shred personal documents, image files and other data on an old PC with Windows 98 and 2 hard drives and thought that everything was working fine. Then I downloaded "Restoration 2.5.14" and tried using it to restore the shredded files. While the file names were changed slightly and the dates of the files may have been changed, by using the search funtion in "Restoration 2.5.14" and simply entering the file extentions for searching, I was able to find and restore files on both hard drives with file extentions .jpg and .mpv!!! I think the CNET Editor's need to retest this program and rewrite their own review. I would not depend on this program to totally make deleted files unrecoverable. I was able to use "Restoration 2.5.14" to overwrite the deleted files making them unrecoverable.

WAV to MP3 Encoder

Version: 2.5

Hey! It's Free!!!

Pros: Does just what it says and no more, but you have a full selection as to how much you want to compress your files from 320kbps all the way down to 8kbps. I usually use Audiocatalyst but don't have it on my newer pc so until I locate the disk this will do.

Cons: While you may not be able to edit the ID3 tag, you can do that in other programs including free players like Winamp, so it is really not a con, just an inconvenience.

Restoration

Version: 2.5

Gave Me Piece of Mind

Pros: I downloaded "Simple File Shredder 2.5" for the purpose of cleaning up 2 hard drives on an old PC before giving it to my nephew. I had a lot of personal information and such that I didn't want anyone to have access to. After using the file shredder I downloaded this program to test it to see if I could restore any of the shredded files. Guess what! I was a able to restore files deleted from both hard drives!!! That was a surprise - So I used the function on this Restoration program to permanently delete the files which does so by writing over them and changing file names etc. and success. I recommend this to anyone that needs to either restore a file or needs to make sure files can't be restored.

Cons: I have no cons to list. If a program does what it is intended to do and it's free then there is nothing to complain about.
