A-squared Free

Version: 3.5.0.11

As good as any other freeware spy remover...

Pros: Caught an email worm on my system as well as a few other nasty spywares. Really nice interface. Frequent and fast updating. Never had a problem with false positives...that's probably because I've never used it's full scan...lol.

Cons: Scanning time is very long.

Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall

Version: 4.40

Might not be 100 percent suitable for Vista yet...

Pros: It's now finally "compatible" with Windows Vista so decided to try it out. Easy to install, looks good, and blocks leak tests. Very advanced with lots of configuration options and detailed logs. Free of constant pop-ups. Low memory usage.

Cons: Like the Comodo Firewall Pro, SPF is probably geared more toward advanced users and could prove confusing for average people. I ultimately decided to uninstall it because it was causing my connection to lag and interfering with some features of instant messaging programs, which ZA and Comodo did not do. I assume this is because it's still not 100 percent friendly with Windows Vista, but not entirely sure. I also don't like how you can't download an indepedent free version without a trial. Three stars over all because it's free for Vista.

McAfee VirusScan Plus

Version: 2008

Decent security package...

Pros: Mcafee VirusScan plus gives you antivirus, antispyware and firewall coverage for a fairly decent (39.99 USD) price which was perfect for me being an average pc user. McAfee VirusScan Plus's real-time protection is very swift at blocking viruses and took just under an hour to do a full scan. The antispyware mechanism didn't seem to pick up very much other than tracking cookies and a couple of more serious spywares. The firewall seems to work quite well and I did not experience any connectivity problems while it was on. McAfee's products are known for hogging system resources, but I can't actually say I noticed much of that moreso than any other antivirus program I've used before. I had it installed on my Dell Inspiron 6400 Vista pc...

Cons: The interface can be a little bit confusing at first and doesn't seem very "friendly." Can obviously bog down a somewhat older machine. McAfee's renewal policy is very stubborn and I had to basically argue with them on the phone to get my subscription cancelled. I know that's not specifically an issue with the product, but it's a good thing to know if you only plan on using their products for a limited time.

Spyware Terminator

Version: 2.2.1.433

Good security but slows down pc...

Pros: Spyware Terminator is one of only two free real-time antispyware applications...the other being Windows Defender. Spyware Terminator probably offers more than any other free antispyware program. Has the fastest full scan time I've ever seen for any spyware scanner. Has a lot of advanced options to play with.

Cons: They say it's compatible with Vista but it doesn't integrate with Vista's security center. Apparently the interface was not a high priority for the makers of Spyware Terminator...no effort put into it. Definitely a resource hog. Perhaps offers a little too much for just average pc users...

Comodo Firewall Pro

Version: 3.0.22.349

Not a basic firewall...

Pros: Almost definitely the strongest free firewall you can protect a pc with. The Defense + element is very reassuring and gives you a sense of security that no other firewall can give, even if you're not always sure exactly what it's doing (like me.) I really like the fact that you can purge old program permissions with one click...very convenient. Comes with an on demand virus scanner...nice! This is definitely the free firewall of choice with all it's elaborate options for advanced users.

Cons: Although it gives your pc solid protection, the Defense + mechanism is just too darn naggy for my liking. I thought the constant pop ups would never end...and they almost didn't. I would call it a very "noisy" firewall. Defense + seems to stay active even when you choose not to activate it during the install wizard. I don't know if this was because of Vista, but the log viewer on Comodo firewall just stopped working suddenly and went blank...never did figure out why that happened. Since I'm not exactly an advanced computer user, I'll stick with ZoneAlarm Free...
