Free Mp3 Wma Converter

Version: 1.7.2

So far so good

Pros: Works (well, so far so good, anyway) for converting m4a to mp3 on win98se, and does actually seem to be limit-free (unlike one I tried called "Magic m4a to mp3 converter" which didn't work and was misleadingly limited). I still need to run an anti-spyware/anti-virus, however, just to be sure. And I've only converted a few files so far. I also like the logical, fairly traditional interface (e.g., it has a menu bar, unlike some really lousy recent apps).

Cons: CAUTION: Be sure and pay close attention to the install options; one says "I agree and install [some garbage]", but that doesn't seem to mean you agree with their thing, as it installed fine with it unchecked. It also tries to install some other unnecessary options/apps later on as well unless you explicitly uncheck them (some may be needed if you are using wma format, but I am not, so I only selected the first one).

Magic M4A to MP3 Converter

Version: 3.12

Doesn't work

Cons: I hate to complain about free software, but this one doesn't work at all so I felt compelled to create an account here for the express purpose to warn people not to waste their time with this thing. I expect it has some undocumented dependency on some MS junk (probably Media Player, which I will NOT update, as it is a horrible app that gets worse with every revision and, like IE, is so integrated with the OS that it can mess up a machine during updates); how am I suppose to know what to install? And why should I have to? Good apps can certainly be written without such dependencies. I'm going to move on and try another app.

Oh, also note that while I was looking through the documentation to try to find out what the dependency was, I noticed it says it IS limited: it will only record 1/3 of a track until you pay for it! This is NOT what the page here says! This page says it is free with NO limitations. DO NOT bother downloading or installing this misleading garbageware.
