SnagIt

Version: 9.0

Works but tied to MS software.

Pros: No problems with downloading, loading and running. No bugs using Vista. Clean interface.

Cons: If all the software on your PC, not just the OS, is a Microsoft package then it should dove-tail well . . . but for those of us using open source applications you'll find it extremely frustrating that you can't change the "open with" defaults. So you save to file, close Snagit and then open what you want to view your file with . . . too much time.

Recover Files

Version: 2

Simple for only simple tasks.

Pros: If you're a careless PC user that doesn't use much security then this software may help you find out what and where you accidentally deleted your info to . . .

Cons: . . . but it really covers only what goes through your recycle bin, it can't seek out files that have gone through any full or partial formatting or over-written deletion.

Adblock Plus

Version: 0.7.5.4

Won't install in Firefox 3

Pros: . . . haven't seen it yet.

Cons: they say it's compatible with FF3 but installing it with FF3 it said it isn't compatible and wouldn't load.

POP Peeper

Version: 3.1

Reliable and easy, saves so much time.

Pros: Though not a great fan of "web-mail" I do have a few accounts and hate the fuss of signing in and signing out, this piece of software sits there quietly and does exactly what it says on the tin!

First, it tells you if one of your accounts has new mail, click on your tool bar icon and you can see which one. Second, it lets you read that mail in a separate browser window but, most valuable, third, you can administer your account from that window . . . you really don't need to sign in and sign out any other way!

It's Vista and Firefox friendly too! What more do you need?

Cons: Unless you read the help section carefully you can get confused in entering your sign in details into POP Peeper but it is easy to correct any mistakes.

Internet Explorer

Version: 7

A dinosaur . . . well short of Firefox

Cons: MS are paying the price for not taking Mozilla seriously - maybe they thought Firefox would only appeal to geeks - and having played the "who do you trust for your security" card that's backfired too. I wish I could remove it from my PC but I understand it's fully embedded with Explorer but, every time an application opens it's web page with IE rather than default browser, I'm reminded how clunky, slow and over-stuffed it is. Nothing now will make me change from Firefox.
