ESET Smart Security

Version: 3.0.642

Perect for me but not for everyone.

Pros: Excellent virus and trojan detection, decent spyware detection. Light on the system which makes it a good choice for Vista users. I have it on one Vista Home Premium and one Windows XP Pro SP-2 drives and Mcafee on the shared desktop in our home with no children still here. Re-designed user interface ia great and simple to use, Firewall is configurable but needs more options like a slide button for different levels of security. Interactive mode works fine for me. It asks lots of questions but remembers your answer's.. It flashes a red highlighted pain on an inbound detection then it's up to you. I gave up Kaspersky woth almost 9 months left on the subscription for this suite on Vista and have not been let down once. I use Norton Ghost to clone all our systems and it picked up and guided me thru creating a recovery disk that includes ESET's drivers.

Cons: No parental controls. No identity theft protection. If you have kids and need a suite with all the fancy features get McAfee, Norton or Trend Micro. But, Trend Micro 2008 sucks. Expensive for a single user license, add $10 bucks for the 2nd. Thats what I did.

Revo Uninstaller

Version: 1.6

still, the best free program I've run across in ages!

Pros: Simple to use and understand. Has 4 different settings from using the program (to be removed) to advanced where it will get it all in 99% of all uninstalls. The only thing that got rid of McAfee security which came factory installed on my new Dell desktop ( the removal tool didn't get it all). It has a couple other tools like a startup manager. Something folks might be interested in thats not available here is the Revo Uninstaller portable version. This is available at their home page and is a great alternative as it works beautifully from a portable device like a Flash Drive. I've tested it from my 4 GB Transcend Jet Flash travel drive and it's the same as this version, just not installed on my hard drive. Just open the extracted folder and click the icon.

Cons: Not safe 100% of the time. In rare cases it might kill a shared registry item (so some claim at a couple user forums) but I've yet to experience it.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone

The verdict is still out!

Pros: I installed this service pack yesterday on a 2 day old formatted HDD with Vista Home Premium. It was worse then my 85 year old granny, slower then a snail starting. I was expecting to wait a few days anyway for the system to cache and gain it's startup and shutdown speeds back anyway. it started to pick up speed within hours of this installation but. Programs start faster too but,...................

Cons: While it lightened the ram usage on this computer by 3%, it hammered my core duo processor which now takes a few more minutes to settle after system start. It did a horrible job on IE 7! The browser is now next to impossible to page with and much slower to open. I installed slim browser for those ocasions where an IE based browser is needed. Thus, the verdict is still out on this service pack but I'm hoping,..........................

Webroot Spy Sweeper

Version: 5.5

There are better choices then Spy Sweeper!

Pros: I first bought this program in 2006 and used it on and off (more off then on). I didn't renew even though I could have for $19.95. It was recently given to me as a gift on a CD in version 5.2. Installed on my Win XP Pro SP2 drive to my many regrets (dogged a fast system. uninstalled immediately). I tried to install on my Vista Home Premium and was immediately prompted to contact Webroot support to obtain a Vista compatible version, I did. Believe it or not, it runs better on Vista then XP for me but I have some concerns.

Cons: I compare other anti-spy programs to Spy Emergency 2007 which is my first choice. Why? because it's fast, light, looks great with skins and detects and deletes infections with it's huge data base nearing 1.000.000 signatures. Spy Sweeper has a paltry 230,000+ (to few signatures in todays market). A full sweep is very slow though fairly effective. It slows me down in a full sweep where the other mentioned program doesn't at all.

Norton Internet Security

Version: 2008

I can't write an honest review,

Pros: I can't write an honest review because i don't use it. i just wanted to drop my penny's worth. I'm thinking, maybe we're a little to hard on old Norton these days. The virus scan rates 96.83%. i.2% behind Kaspersky. Not really to shabby now, is it? Their removal tool works , for those who didn't know, if you want to uninstall it. The interface is professional looking and for those wanting a full set of features, their all in ithere best I can tell. Unlike the common belief that it's expensive, it can be had at buy cheap software for a paltry $20,00 a year. Just shop on line but not from Norton, please!

Cons: It's my belief that no suite is bullet proof. On a new machine this one should be fine though. Hell, six / half dozen or the other anyway!
