Font Fitting Room Deluxe

Version: 2.9.6.3

very useful

Pros: After trying out half a dozen font viewers this is the first that supports unicode fonts and has necessary features like font smoothing. In other words, the first program I tried today that was actually useful!

Cons: On a 1,6 GHz machine with 512 MB RAM the program got pretty SLOW at times, especially when opening large Unicode fonts or browsing folders with many fonts.

Also, I wish it had a filter to limit the selection (for example bold only, true type only, symbol fonts only, or must include Japanese...)

Finally, I was missing a function to resize the characters in the character map.

Windows Fonts Explorer

Version: 3.6

Can't display names of Asian fonts

Pros: It's small, it's fast.

Cons: It can open the Windows fonts folder, but it can't open a font in charmap or MS Font Viewer :(

The names of Asian fonts are unreadable if they include Chinese/Japanese/Korean characters. Please use a Unicode font for the font name window!

The characters of some Chinese fonts are displayed sideways.

Small error: The icons have an ugly white shadow on the brownish program window. They need some photoshopping.

Font Explorer

Version: 2.7

Can't display font names with non-latin characters

Cons: The software can't handle non-latin characters in font names... this is quite bad if you have for example ?? ?? and ?? ???? and you can't tell which is which.

You would expect a font display software to use a unicode font internally...

And it does not include something like charmap.

Also, it wants to restart the computer after install. What for??

Font Wrangler

At least make a command to open charmap

Cons: Since the program does not include an internal charmap / font viewer, the least thing it could include is a command to open the selected font in the charmap or MS Font Viewer program that comes with windows. It should take around 10 mins to code that in.

Font Xplorer

Version: 1.2.2

Doesn't handle Unicode properly

Cons: The charmap window only displays the first 256 characters, which means it does not display the non-latin characters of a Unicode font.

It displayed fonts from ttc files, but it could not locate the source file (?) and could not open properties of these fonts. If you open the fonts system folder, it does not find fonts from these files at all.
