Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium

Version: 7.06.00.306

Let me save you some time...

Pros: If you're looking for one of the best anti-virus programs I've got 2 pieces of good news: 1) You've found it. 2) It's also one of the cheapest.

For the last 5-6 years I've experimented with just about all of the available anti-spy, ad, spam, virus software you can think of and THIS one is where I landed.

1. It is amazingly thorough - it finds stuff that most of the others wont.

2. At $26 it's about half of what the other big names charge.

3. You can customize just about every facet of this beauty.

4. At the risk of stereotyping; I tend to trust the Germans (ie; TuneUp 2008) when it comes to technology and details (talk about anal, I think these guys are potty-trained at gun point).

Cons: 1. I suggest you schedule it to run when you're all tucked in beddie-bye, it will take a while for a full system scan - but if you've got yourself a bug it'll find it.

2. The free personal version of this baby will hit you with a few pop-ups - a small price to pay for the most thorough virus scan I've been able to acquire.

Comodo Firewall Pro

Version: 3.0.22.349

Save your $$$ This is the BEST!!!

Pros: There simply is NO better protection for your computers/private network, period!.

I know - without a doubt - that my system is all but immune to attack (using CFP with addition measures, ie; Avira [another best], layers) and THAT is worth the extra attention this software requires.

Cons: You will have to LEARN to use it.

This firewall (and HIPS - you have to use the HIPS if you want all it has to offer) is NOT SIMPLE.

It is EASY however, once you take the time to discover how to properly use it.

Don't be a crybaby just because you want everything handed to you on a plate - assume responsibility for your own protection and make the effort, you'll thank me later!

Product:

Acronis True Image Home

Version: 11

Did exactly what I wanted

Pros: I had 2 IDE drives that were slow, loud, and about to die.

I installed ATI and created an image of each drive on an external usb HDD.

I powered down, installed 2 new SATA drives and booted from the easy to create Bootable Recovery Disk (for use in an instance like mine, where no OS is in place).

I restored each image to a new HDD.

Unplugged the usb and booted right from the new drive.

All of my files, apps, music, vids, and OS were exacly as they were before - but with almost a TB of new storage!

Cons: It's expensive and many report errors and an assortment of problems.

For me it did EXACTLY what I needed.

Product:

Ashampoo Internet Accelerator

Version: 2.1

They're not Lying

Pros: It is indeed free

It works okay (6/10 overall)

I clocked a 10kbps increase on one PC and nothing on the other.

Do a speed test, dl and run this app, test again - if it doesn't work you get your money back. =)

Cons: You have to jump through a hoop or two to get it - but you can then acquire all of the Ashampoo 'free' products with the same credentials, and most of them are worth it.

Look, I honestly recommend Ashampoo's various utilities to average PC users who aren't interested in getting their hands dirty and taking the time to learn the "hows and whys" of tweaking and/or security software but DO want adequate performance.

Glary Utilities

Version: 2.3.4

At last...at last !

Pros: 1) Finally, a "tune-up" utility that we can all afford.

2) Fast download, set up, and execution...wicked fast.

3) It's pretty, no really, you'll see. Easy on the eyes.

4) Has everything I need and nothing I don't, period.

I'm a happy camper.

Cons: You will be prompted for an activation once, apparently...boo hoo. Shut up, it's free.
