Second Copy

Version: 7.1.0.3

I use Second Copy for instantaneous backup of development files - Great!

Pros: In my software development work, I needed a tool to create backup copies of files automatically whenever they change. Also, to maintain a number of generations of backups. I needed the backups to be placed on a separate drive, and to work whether or not the files were in use by another program. Second Copy meets these needs very well, running transparently in the background, it just carries out its functions without my having to think about it or interact in any way. The backup files are just always there, always current. Very fast, very light. Highly configurable for a wide variety of uses. Great value.

ABBYY PDF Transformer

Version: 2.0.98

Worked OK, but conversion results are poorly structured & difficult to use

Pros: Conversion is pretty fast and pretty accurate. Plain text is rendered well.

Cons: Converts only horizontal text. Doesn't separate words & numbers in a PDF table into Excel columns very well. E.g., table rows are often rendered as a single cell with many numbers separated by spaces. Text embedded in graphics is not rendered accurately.

Smart PDF Converter Pro

Version: 4.3

Doesn't handle tables very well

Cons: I needed to convert PDF tables into MS Excel. Sometimes puts numbers from adjoining columns together inside a single cell, rather than keeping them separate.

ABC Amber PDF Converter

Version: 4.01

Really good for converting PDF to Excel, plain text, & others. Very cheap, too!

Pros: Accurately converts PDF text to many formats, including MS Excel and Access. Converts all text in the PDF, including tables, both horizontally and vertically oriented text. Preserves word order, etc., and tables are arranged correctly as tables. Does the best job with tables of anything I've tried. At $13, its a bargain, too.

Cons: Unfortunately, it puts every word in its own cell in Excel. But word order is preserved, so you can easily gather it all up into single text strings with Excel formulas. Tends to put footnotes at the top of the worksheet, oddly enough. User interface is a little clunky, but still effective and very usable.
