The absolute b-e-s-t among freeware antivirus n somewhat even better than paid!!!
Pros: Avira boasts of an outstanding detection rate at the least expense of memory n processor usage which does put down every other antivirus program. Among freeware avira is fast and dead serious about detecting malwares, now remember that no antivirus is perfect so it's not neccessary that avira will detect all the viruses with immaculate precision but it'll get most of em which others will miss. Avira doesn't give the user the slightest hint that an antivirus program is running in the background. There is an absolute minimal impact on ur computer performance and boot times, your computer will still boot up as though u never had an anti virus installed!!! When compared to freewares the only thing missing is a spyware detection module...but thats no big downside...that is compensated by an impeccable detection rate n the program wont just intercept viruses, worms or trojans but some other malware varients. Avast! is good but will slow down boot up and application startup, i.e. it'll make its prescence felt and the latest version of AVG free will make its prescence felt even more, compared to its counterparts Avira not only consumes less memory while running in the background but has THE FASTEST on demand and on access scanning till date, this is where avira even scores over its paid counterparts. Do remember that choosing avira as the primary anti virus program is probably the best decisiom you can take. The premium version is even better n faster. Avira has outperformed evry anti virus program in tests conductted by cnet as well as av-comparatives ....what more can i say????
Cons: Slow updates but not that bad, atleast for me, takes longer than other antivirus programs to update itself, however manula updates available. The program will also nag you to buy the full version using a pop up screen every time avira free updates itself. The program may also report some legit programs as threats. However these cons are a minor felony compared to what kind of solid protection you will be getting, couple this with a good firewall like comodo 3 pro and an antispyware program lik apybot or spyware terminator or winpatrol and ur good to go.
