Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

The best freeware antivirus, period.

Pros: Excellent detection engine, much better than Avast or AVG. Will pickup lots of trojans, viruses, and even has an anti rootkit engine. Interface gets around, nothing impressive but efficient none the less. Frequent updates keep you secured. This is a very generous offering from Antivir. I use it now with no regrets.

Cons: Nag screen at update, and relatively slow updates. Some people find the interface bad as well. If you have dial up, do not use this app. Updates range from 8-14MB in size. Other than that, great.

Spyware Terminator

 Version: 1.9

Powerful, useful freeware application

Pros: The program is robust, with a full time shield, and a powerful scanning engine, and a relatively decent interface. Definitely a good tool to add to your personal armory for the fight against spyware.

Cons: This comes up with many antivirus and antispyware applications, I can't really test the effectiveness of them, simply because I never get any viruses. I ended up turning off the real time shield simply because I found it unnecessary.

Trend Micro HouseCall

A very attractive offering from Trend Micro

Pros: Efficient and fast scanning engine, and since it isn't on your computer, viruses have a hard time shutting it off. Good detection, and the recommendations at the end help you better secure your pc.

Cons: An extremely useful tool, I haven't found any flaws.

Amazing freeware

Pros: Packed with features, more stable and useful than the standard explorer, and a nice attractive simple interface.

Cons: I can't really come up with anything.

Auslogics Disk Defrag

Doesn't actually do anything

Pros: Attractive interface, nice offering from auslogics

Cons: This is nice and all, the problem is, it doesn't actually defrag much. When I tested it versus diskeeper, auslogics managed to defragment absolutely nothing. When I analyzed with diskeeper, my entire drive was still 69% fragmented. I respect the developers for offering free software, but they need to improve the defragging process that is used by the program.
