FireTune for Firefox

Version: 1.1.4

It doesn't get much easier than this

Pros: I've used various tools that promise to optimize this or that and usually they ask sometimes obscure technical questions and I wonder if I've got just the right answer and how that might affect the result of the process. Not here. There are two questions (five if you chose the advanced, but still easy options) and they are simply: Is your internet connection fast or slow and is your computer fast or slow. Easy definitions are provided to help you pick and then click START, and in seconds Firefox is tweaked appropriately.

Cons: It would be nice if there was a tool included that would measure some performance metrics before and after so you could more easily see just how effective the setting changes are.

BearFlix

Version: 1.1.6.1

I'm sticking with Limewire

Pros: I've used a number of p2p applications but I should disclose my long-standing affection for Limewire. It's easy-to-use, well-supported, and has a large peer community. In my trial of this program, I didn't find any videos with Bearflix that I couldn't find with Limewire, and the selection there was greater. Bearflix does offer the option of using Magnet+.

Cons: I found Bearflix's download progress indicators to be obscure and confusing and the overall interface, while adequate, wasn't especially streamlined and immediately intuitive.

All-In-One Sidebar

Version: 0.7.1

Puts controls a little closer-at-hand

Pros: They say this puts download status in the sidebar, and makes history, favorites, and add-ons easy-to-find, which is all true. But I'm not convinced there is much advantage to be had, unless you really hate Firefox's download pop-up, in which case this might be worth it for that alone.

Cons: Although it only takes up a bit, it does take over some screen real estate. Nothing wrong with All-In-One Sidebar, but for me, it doesn't add anything I'm missing in Firefox as-is.

Revo Uninstaller

Version: 1.33

An excellent utility for the frequent downloader...

Pros: ... which would be most of us here at c|net, right? This slick utility stands-in for Window's Add & Remove Programs component of Control Panel and goes the extra mile to make sure that when you remove something, it's really all gone. There are a number of buttons in the interface which can be a little confusing, but the uninstall function works simply enough.

Cons: Be careful to chose "uninstall" and not "delete" as the latter will remove the entry from the list but doesn't remove it from the system. When removing a program, Revo Uninstaller does a before and after scan, and if remnants are found after the uninstall it will prompt for your OK to remove them. Do take the time to review the list before clicking OK. An "undo" feature would be a nice addition. I would definitely recommend using System Restore in conjunction with Revo Uninstaller, but that's solid advice anyway.
