ZoneAlarm Firewall (Windows 2000/XP)

Version: 7.1

Hands down the best firewall out there

Pros: ZoneAlarm is a must-have for any home user who doesn't want to buy expensive (and sometimes ineffective) commercial software. After installing this program a couple of weeks ago, it has already blocked almost 3,000 intrusion attempts! 20 of them were highly-dangerous. ZoneAlarm works joyously in the background, blocking EVERY attempt to access your computer over the internet, whether inbound or out. All you have to do is allow your most used programs that you trust with access to the internet, and your protected. Highly recommended.

Cons: The popups that block access without your consent and keep you safe can get kind of annoying after awhile, but it only lasts a couple of days as ZoneAlarm "learns" your computer.

OpenOffice.org

Version: 2.2.1

Microsoft Office Free.

Pros: It would take a very long time to list all of the different pros for Openoffice.org, so I'll paraphrase it. Openoffice = Microsoft Office free. I think you can figure that one out.

Cons: There are only three small reasons that keep Openoffice from getting the five stars. First, the load speed. Openoffice has problems with loading quickly, and tends to lag. Second, the drab interface. Although it works, the GUI for Openoffice is a depressing gray or neutral color. A little more color would help enormously. Third, a lack of a task pane. The task pane in Microsoft Office is convenient and helpful. The lack of a task pane is not serious, but it would be nice to have. None of these are serious or required, but this great software needs to add a couple of bell's and whistles.

Copernic Agent Basic

Version: 6.1

Fantastic for finding information and conducting research

Pros: Basically, Copernic Agent is a program that searches all of the top search engines, and filters the results according to how well it pertains to your search, for whatever you type into the search box. Copernic Agent is amazing for hunting down those sites that have the information you need. A fantastic program to have on your hard-drive. For searching your hard-drive itself, check out the Copornic Desktop Search.

Paint.NET

Version: 3.08

A must-have paint program for users running Windows XP and Vista.

Pros: There is alot of good things to say about Paint.net. The most obvious perk is the price: Free. You can almost think of Paint.net as the big brother of Microsoft Paint. It was designed to be exactly that, and it does with flying colors. There are many cool and interesting effects that you can apply to your images with just a couple of clicks. It's nowhere near the amount found in the Gimp, but you can download user-made effects from their website. Just download it and take it for a test drive.

Cons: The only con for this otherwise fabulous product is the requirements. People who don't have Windows XP or Vista might be upset when they learn that Paint.net will not work on their computer. The only answer to that is to get a new computer, but if you aren't running Windows XP (at least), you need to get in the 21st century. (no offense intended, but older operating systems are no longer supported. So it would be beneficial for you in case you run into problems.

OpenOffice.org

Version: 2.2

Amazing alternitive to Microsoft Office.

Pros: The modest price tag of "free" may be the deciding factor for people to switch to using openoffice. It has all of the features of Microsoft Office, and then some.

Cons: The lack of a grammar checker is a little disappointing for how great it is otherwise.
