RoboForm

Version: 6.9

How Did I Ever Live Without It???

Pros: I'm fond of comparing Roboform to the microwave oven: I used to know how to cook without one. Now I don't even remember life before the microwave.

It's that way with Roboform. I *thought* I only had a few websites where I had to enter usernames and passwords. When my list ballooned to 142 passcards and I had to pay for the software, I did so gladly. I honestly can't remember what life was like before Roboform, and I don't wanna.

It's also provided 2 unexpected sources of security: (1) Because you no longer have to make sure that usernames and passwords are memorable, you can use the program to generate totally uncrackable codes for either or both, and (2) I used to keep my credit card info in a non-secured program on my computer. Switching from a desktop to a laptop made that a Very Bad Idea. Roboform has a Safenotes function where you can store any data you want; I can easily password-protect not only my passcards but my credit card data any time my computer leaves the house, and it can't even be accessed by searching for its data folder on the hard drive.

GoodSync

Version: 7.1.9

Must-Have Back-Up Software, But It Is NOT Free

Pros: From Siber Systems, creators of Roboform, comes another piece of how-did-I-ever-live-without-it software. I bought a 500GB external drive to back up my business and personal data, and then went in search of the perfect software to keep it backed up. I tried literally 30 different programs; this was the only one that did what I wanted and was reliable at doing it.

It was very important for me to be able to simply retrieve what I wanted from my back-up location without having to use the back-up software itself to "restore" folders and files, which is cumbersome. GoodSync does that.

I almost didn't try this software because of its name. While it is designed to actually synchronize files between two drives, if you only want it to back-up one way, you can set it up that way.

Cons: Interface is less intuitive than many; you'll probably have to refer to the manual a little. But that's a short-term problem for a splendid long-term solution.

Cool Free Audio to MP3 Converter

Version: 5

Worthless

Cons: The workable product is not free - this is just a come-on to get you to download it. When attempting to use as free version, it won't convert even the one file it says it's limited to (gives the error message that it's limited to only one file, then won't convert it).

1st Clock

Version: 4.0

An Exceptional Piece of Software

Pros: There is NOTHING to not like about 1st Clock. At last, a program that will do what Microsoft SHOULD have done, and display both the time AND date in your system tray. And unlike every other program I tried, both free and otherwise, it mimics the Windows tray and actually functions properly, even in Vista.

The reminder function is exceptional. It's extraordinarily flexible and still has an intuitive interface. And, just in case that wasn't enough for you, you can also set up the program to keep your computer on the correct time by synchronizing it with a number of different internet time servers. In short, it's worth every penny.

Cons: My only complaint is about the trial version: since it's limited to 30 days, there's no need for the nag screen. Once you've used it for 30 days it'll be too hard to part with. No annoying nagging necessary.

Desktop Sidebar

Version: 1.1.3

Better Alternative Than Vista Sidebar & Yahoo Widgets

Pros: I switched from Yahoo Widgets because this one has more "widgets" that I wanted, and the applications are much more stable and reliable. Amazingly customizeable. I feel fortunate to have found it.
