ScreenHunter

Version: 5 Free

Good, but not perfect

Pros: Fairly easy to use, has no problem getting around simple software precautions against screen captures. Sometimes when you say "Capture Desktop" you mean, "Capture primary monitor desktop", which makes ScreenHunter perfect for the job.

Cons: Default options make a loud noise and bring up a dialogue box every time you capture an image. Fortunately you can turn those off.

Cannot save to PNG format, so screen shots are either compressed to very lossy GIF format, or you get the strange speckles that JPG gives you, or you are stuck with huge BMP files for loss-less images. ScreenPrint32 saves to PNG, either 8bit or 24bit, which reproduces so much better than GIF or JPG.

Finally, ScreenHunter ignores multi-monitor setups, and always grabs screen shots of only the primary monitor. ScreenPrint32 grabs the COMPLETE desktop, regardless of how many monitors you have, or how they are arranged.

AutoIt

Version: 3.2.8.1

Love it, use it all the time

Pros: Very powerful, very clever. Great set of built-in routines to hand most tasks with ease, and the development environment with its smart integrated help function makes it easy to come back to the language a few months later and quickly get back up to speed.

Great for writing new-improved front-ends for clumsy programs with terrible interfaces. I used it to write little scripts for repetitively updating the track info in iTunes and WMP, for prototyping GUI changes, for checking the colour value of certain pixels on my screen, and more. I'm here downloading the latest copy for my new Vista machine.

Cons: The recording capabilities are good, but not quite as powerful as I might like. On the other hand, making it more powerful than it is would be a tremendous amount of work, so I'm not surprised it hasn't been done yet.

If you have a background in programming, it's easy to learn, but otherwise, unless you enjoy a puzzle, this is probably not the right tool for you.

QuickEditor

Version: 4.0

Basic, but does the job

Pros: Works as advertised, very simple interface, a little unusual in usage, but otherwise does what it says. Worth trying; easy to uninstall if it isn't for you.

Cons: Not as obvious to use as it should be. You need to launch the program by opening only one file; it then let you edit the tags of all other MP3s in the same folder. Can edit all the files at once, but must save after each kind of tag is modified.

Wish it could generate names from track numbers, and generate track numbers from file names, but otherwise it does what I need.

MagicDisc

Version: 2.7.101

Good program, I'm pretty happy with it.

Pros: Easy to use, takes no effort, can have multiple virtual drives open at once. Can also create ISO and other disk images, very easy to use, found no compatibility problems.

Cons: For some reason I always have two MagicDisk icons in the status area of my taskbar, but it works fine otherwise so I have stopped worrying about it.

Pismo File Mount Audit Package

Version: 1.0.0.038

Works fairly well, but doesn't mount as a volume

Pros: Fast install in Vista, could instantly mount my ISO, but it mounted as a folder in my existing file structure, not as a new virtual drive. Options are easy to use, and most of the time this will work very well.

Cons: Unable to specify the mount point.
