Spybot - Search & Destroy

Version: 1.6

More agile than Cnet

Pros: Version 1.6 clearly improves, for example, on the "immunization" for Opera, which was getting buggy. On the whole, its a fine app, always trying to adapt itself to an ever changing environment, made by people who know their business. The advanced mode gives you a fine array of options, but the basic interface gives you what is needed, without any fuss.

Cons: Cnet doesn't seem to move so fast, and, in this case, with a lot more errors. The video shows Spybot 1.4 (!) and the slightly unsympathetic editor's review belongs to that old version, or some other, even older. That is so unfair, for such a useful project.

Comodo BackUp

Version: 1

Straightforward

Pros: The comments seem to refer to a previous version. The program has been updated for Vista (version 1.0.4.337 available at Comodo). Perfect for clean regular copies of whole directories into an external device. Straightforward interface, very intuitive. Makes scheduled backups, even in short intervals.

Cons: The choice between modes of backup isn't that clear. But the default "simple copy" will satisfy most clients. The automatic update doesn't seem to work in Vista (it asks for administrative privileges, to which it doesn't respond; nothing serious, for a first Vista version). Anyway, this is not the kind of program that needs frequent updating. Maybe that's why Cnet didn't notice the new version. I wonder why so much useful & free software goes unnoticed in this site...

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 3.0.1

De Luxe

Pros: The change from FF2 to FF3.0.1 was as smooth as installing a little add-on. I just had to reintroduce a couple of saved passwords on the updated 'Secure Login', not all of them. The gain in general behaviour is obvious. One more change we can believe in!

Cons: There was some sort of fear campaign that made me stick to FF2 for a while. Some people made me think that maybe it was too soon for such a leap. Maybe FF3 was not quite ready. Finally, I tried it on a new computer. What was all that BS about? There is no browser like this one. The couple of add-ons that still weren't compatible made me discover new and better alternatives. Want a flying carpet? Make one.

Comodo Firewall Pro

Version: 3.0.25.378

Read the Instructions

Pros: This software is the best of its kind. But, to get the most of it, as with any other sophisticated tool or even a home appliance, you should read a few instructions. In the case of Comodo, it is enough to neatly print the 3 Help pages called "Understanding Alerts" and browse through.

Cons: All the complaints about this exceptional software seem to be related with people ignoring the basics. As stated above, just read a few recommendations and you'll be on top of this formidable gear. Some people still seem to think that you can stop complex threats with the mere touch of a button. Well, you can do that. Try the one that says "Power".

AbiWord

Version: 2.5.2 beta

Easy to use, no hidden tricks

Pros: Great tool for those who hate when software tries to think for you. No automatic formatting getting in the way. You can freely choose between styles, from a box in the toolbar. Couldn't be more straightforward. Clear & simple.

Cons: This is a typical beta. It works fine, but still stumbles here and there. It still seems a little shaky when dealing with tables and borders, and the moving of blocks of text can be weird at times (the pointer doesn't follow the block the way you'd expect). In spite of this and some tiny details - like a blurred icon on the main toolbar - you can trust it, and it is a good writing tool already.
