Game Maker

Version: 6.1

Difficult to use...

Pros: It's awkward to use for a user like me, but with practice and experience the interface becomes familiar and gamemaking becomes easy. It's a brilliant platform where you soon start getting results for your efforts. There's also a comprehensive help file that comes with it, and it supplies the answers to most queries.

Cons: The interface is confusing at first, you need to practice before you can make real games.

StumbleUpon

Great Pastime

Pros: Brilliant for when you're bored and want something to keep you occupied. Highly customisable, you can select from a range of options to control what kind of webpage you "Stumble" onto. There is a rating system in place, which helps keep the best stuff ranked high and the rubbish chucked out.

Cons: If you have a small range of preferences, you can find seeing the same page now and again. Nevertheless, a useful and fun piece of software.

Winamp

Version: 5.32

Best media player out there!

Pros: It is a relatively lightweight package compared to others like iTunes.

It can be customized and given new skins, and countless useful plugins can be downloaded and installed from the plugins section of their website.

All kinds of formats are supported, and almost all the features are free. Nagware isn't an issue with this either.

There is also a "remove all dead files" which I find invaluable and doesn't seem to be a feature on iTunes. Winamp is my definite favourite.

Google Earth

Version: 4

Essential

Pros: A priceless tool. If you're ever in need of directions, but you're too lazy and fat to get up and look at one of your maps - Google have the answer with not only a map of the world that's free, but one that's superior to your paper maps. The detail is superb in many areas and there are tonnes of options for displaying map features such as landmarks etc.

Cons: There are a few unavoidable cons that come with this; the maps can never be entirely up to date, and loading times can be a pain for people with a slow connection. Nevertheless, Google have done an amazing job here.

Zombietron 1 - Cemetery Guy

Version: 1

Fun!

Pros: Entertaining and good graphics for a ~8MB game, a range of difficulty options. You can also upgrade your character with points you earn.

Cons: I ran out of ammo when fighting bosses and there didn't seem to be a way of getting more. Ammo starvation isn't so great.
