Google SketchUp

Version: 6.0.277

Great for true beginners

Pros: This program is a great start for true beginners. The learning curve is very low. The tutorial section is outstanding. The multiple options for drawing are very appealing. Different tools, including the tape measure and protractor, are a great add-in for anyone who wants to design to scale. Multiple camera options give the user great control when designing. Great compatibility with a graphics pad.

Cons: Number one: the upgrade cost for exporting to formats for use in other 3d programs. Number two: freehand drawing is not that great when trying to create curves and arcs. Overall: Great for true beginners. You can't beat the price. When / if you are ready for an upgrade, I suggest finding a few other programs and comparing them to Google Sketchup. There are more powerful programs available for free and pay, that have greater export ability and more functionality.

Paint.NET

Version: 3

Excellent software! Very easy to use and nice features

Pros: This product is definately a step up from paint. The learning curve is almost non-existent. Very simple interface. Several choices for colors including color wheel, palettes, hsv and rgb. After I installed and started the program, I was able to immediately use my graphics tablet. Several choices of effects are a nice bonus. The ability to add plugins (via postings in the forum) is also another nice feature. No detectable viruses or spyware by windows live onecare or adaware. Overall, I am very impressed with this program. No problems with installation or use on windows xp. I have tried several graphics editing programs including photoshop, the gimp, deep paint, and painter. Paint.net has really grabbed my attention. I use it for freehand drawing with a graphics tablet and obsevered the same results as when I use a pencil and paper. If you are looking for a professional, high-end program, Paint.net is not it. If you are looking for a program that is a step up from paint and is easy to use, Paint.net is one of the programs you should try. I am very satisfied with it.
