Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Five Language Standalone

They really blew it this time!

Pros: Nothing good to say about SP 1 for Vista at all! What kind of idiots does Bill Gates have working at Microsoft? In their over zeal to improve Vista, they blundered badly. This is, undoubtedly a minus star update, that was released way to soon.

Cons: Installed, blue screen, memory dump several times. Tried to restore system every way known to man, from windows, from safe mode and from my Vista DVD. nothing. More blue screen, memory dump errors. Reformat was the only solution. What a load of you know what, this is! I truly feel bad for those who have no disks or thse knowledge to reformat after this service pack is done trashing their systems.

ESET Smart Security

Version: 3.0.642

Nice!

Pros: The new suit by ESET is a nice product. I guess they got it. The new interface both in the suite and AV is vastly improved and it's now easy to use. Solid virus rating at a tad under 98%. The scan and guard are both light on a system which is a big plus with Vista. Great tech support and it's an American company.

Cons: Expensive! No data theft protection or parental controls. I still like it on my Vista system. I have all sensitive data on a password protected external hard drive and no children living at home.

Webroot Spy Sweeper

Version: 5.5

folks can whine about it all they like.

Pros: But, the bottom line remains the same. Webroot is a reputable software vendor. Nothing like PC Tools at all.

Spy sweeper is an excellent anti-spy app in the full version and I have no issues with it consuming resources at all. In fact, I'm running a full sweep as I write this review, with no slow down at all. It has excellent detection of all types of nasties and it now can be purchased as an integral part of a security suite with a firewall and AV module. They will never bill your credit card for renewal without your consent.

Cons: Although theres no false positives (scare tactics) associated with the free trial, it's useless and I can't recommend it unless you plan on a purchase.

McAfee Internet Security Suite

Version: 2008

Ok, heres the deal!

Pros: First, I won't describe this suite like others have, "the best, awesome, great. better then the others, top dog, etc". what I'll do is explain as briefly as I can why I kept it. I've been trying to use Vista now for one full year and it hasn't been pretty. It's easily corrupted and SP-1 for Vista destroyed my system. Through trial and many errors I think I finally got it. I bought a new Dell XPS 420 gaming desktop with a G-Force 8800 GT video card and a core duo E6850 3.0GHz chip. Although I specifically stated "no security" the factory slipped and it came with a 15 month subscription of McAfee 2008.

The suite is a compilation of their best from 2007, a new virus scan,v12, security center v8, firewall v9, anti-spam v9 and privacy service v10. The GUI has been re-designed, the firewall is configurable and asks but remembers your answers.

With a virus rating of just over 91%, I had some concern due to my poor internet habits but it's turned out to be OK.

I also use Norton Ghost and an external hard drive, just in case. The problems there are, the ghost recovery console doesn't support the firewall driver in my two favorite security suites, Kaspersky and ESET Smart Security. It does recognize and can recover all McAfee drivers and it really works. Important to me considering what I've been through with Vista.

Like I said, Vista can be messed up in a heartbeat, Trust me, I've installed it 50+ times, om my computers and friends computers. So, I decided to leave it be and have not been sorry. I gave it some solid partners though. The new Spy Sweeper (Vista version) and Spy Emergency 2008. I'll add Bit Defender Free when a Vista version becomes available. The bottom line with me is, if you are using Vista and this suite is pre-installed or your looking for one that runs fine on Vista, this is a good choice.

.

Cons: It's hell to uninstall. The removal tool doesn't work all the time. Should you decide to change, Revo Uninstaller can handle the job. It detects cookies and a few items that aren't real threats. The initial scan is slow. It takes time to figure out all it's settings and features. Maybe 30 minutes. The virus scan will never quite measure up to KAV or Antivir Premium but it does a good job. Hell, Trend Micro failed virus testing and like AVG, isn't even listed at AV comparatives. McAfee is.

Windows Vista Ultimate upgrade

I can't recommend any version of Vista as an upgrade.

Pros: Oh, Vista is a great looking system. The Areo package is a great new feature. It has a softer, richer, deeper appearance then any past version of Windows. Thats where it ends.

Cons: I've been using Vista since it's pre-release days as a beta tester for Microsoft. The computer I had then wasn't even close to the requirements for Vista.Last year I bought a new PC that was a minimal Vista Areo machine. It sucked, had many hardware problems and was eventually replaced by Dell as a system exchange. The replacement scored a 5.3 out of a possible high score for Vista in the Windows Experience Index. Things were looking up until Microsoft released (way to soon) SP 1 for Vista. It destroyed my OS three separate times.

Oh chit! What now? I re-formatted my drive once again but this time I blocked this update, changed the way Windows alerts me of security issues so that red shield wouldn't show on my task bar. Now, after almost 18 months of trial and error, heartaches and countless hours formatting a hard drive and re-installing everything, I have a dependable, good performing Vista System. justchuck69 has it pegged for what any Vista upgrade is, a waste of money and time. If you want a real Vista System, get a real Vista computer and be very sure which ever version of Vista you choose, the service pack is a part of the Vista OS, not as an update on you, then consumer to mess with.
