IE7Pro

Version: 2.3

If you have to use IE7 you NEED this!

Pros: This is a simply wonderful addition to IE7. It adds a lot of functionality to the browser that just isn't available (or easily available) without it. From Ad-Blocking (very much like AdBlock Plus for Firefox), to User Scripts (like Grease Monkey for Firefox), easily applying Proxy server settings, Closed Tab History, Session restoration, and User Plugins to do things like present server information, give you your local forecast, and many many more. This is just too handy and makes IE7 at least a little more viable a competitor to Firefox.

Cons: It doesn't do anything to fix the inherent security problems in IE7 - but that's not their fault, they can't do what Microsoft won't/can't. The biggest thing I gripe about with this is that the filter creator for blocking ads is not as intuitive as it could be (See "Element Hiding Helper" for Firefox and you'll see what I mean). But all in all it's very much worth it to block the ads it does by default. Their forums can help you learn how to create effective blocking filters for most things.

Foxit PDF Reader

Version: 2.3 build 2923

Not perfect, but REALLY good!

Pros: This is a great alternative PDF reader to Adobe Acrobat. It's faster, uses less memory, doesn't leave/require a constant service to be running, doesn't try to install a ton of start-up or service type ***** onto your system. The blazing speed of FoxIt Reader really is the single greatest feature, IMO.

Cons: It doesn't always handle the scripted forms very well (things like auto-calculating character sheets for games) and occasionally has trouble with very large PDF files (sizes over 100 MB is where I've seen problems, but then I've had this same problem with Acrobat Reader, too). 2.3 is a lot more stable than older versions but it can still use some additional work in that area. [This only applies to large files, smaller ones it read without a problem.]

Safari

Version: 3.1.2

Really sharp!

Pros: The browser is fast and stable, and standards compliant.

Cons: Had some early problems on Windows, but then what software on Windows DOESN'T have problems? With the OS having so many software on it will too... Apple's Safari browser is better on OS X, but it's not bad in Windows either.

Desktop Assistant

Version: 1.0.2

Useful, but not worth having 'always on'

Pros: Decent speed and desktop integration

Cons: Only moderately useful. Not 'handy' to have to click a tray icon to bring up a text box to type in a term to search out... Can do this by typing the word in a search field off a website favorite link launched from the desktop just as easily.

7-Zip Portable

Version: 4.57

Excellent! Universally useful with minimal fuss and requirements

Pros: Multi-format capable (zip, rar, ace, etc) built-in; Lightweight, uses little disk space and system resources; Fast, even in the highest compression rating (often better than WinRAR's & WinZip's best - from my experience at least) it is reasonably fast and at lower compression settings it flies; Free, the price can't be beat; Multi-OS, can be used on Linux, Windows (9x, 2k/XP and Vista), and OS X; automatic and customizable sizing for breaking an archive into pieces when compressing (can make them all CD-ROM sized to burn to disc, or Zip-100 sized, or just to 136MB if you wanted to); and there's additional "plug-in" type options on their site for a range of other formats and features.

Cons: The OS X version is less GUI-capable (oddly since OS X is VERY GUI-centric) but there's an "EZ 7z" application/add-on to fix that. Other than this - no draw backs. It's simply a great (de)compression and archiving tool that should be a "must have" for everyone with files to archive or compress for sending across the wire.
