Lara Croft Tomb Raider

Spyware alert! :(

Pros: Liked the idea of an animated Lara Croft screensaver; too bad about the downside of this file!

Cons: Whenever I attempt to download this executable, McAfee launches an alert that it has identified both spyware and a Trojan downloader in the file, and insists on erasing it. (Do NOT download it!) CNET staff, where are you? I suggest you run virus scans on executables posted on your site for download!

Pharaoh

Excellent example of a civilisation/strategy game

Pros: An excellent game, despite its vintage, with a good level of complexity, modelling impacts of different developments on a society and its inhabitants. (In that respect I strongly disagree with one of the other reviewers, who found it too complex.) Details were good, even down to the city inhabitants giving different comments, depending on the mood of the city. From somebody who generally finds strategy games a bit *****-hum after a few goes, this one is addictive.

Cons: The street-based "walker" algorithm is a bit clunky, although understandable as a programming building-block. Neglect the system and it usually declines, whereas a bit of autonomous positive activity in the algorithms would have been good (and make returning to the PC after being away more interesting, rather than having the invariable decline-and-fall of Thebes awaiting).

Talking Time Keeper

Elegant.

Pros: In a word, elegant. Does everything it promises, and more, with style.

Cons: Animations are a bit "busy" and brief, leading to a staccato feel. If they were a bit calmer and less repetitive (put a random element plus much longer sequences?), this would be perfect. By the way, why not use the cogwheel artwork that's the corporate default, in a skin of its own? This beautiful artwork is crying out for more use.
