McAfee VirusScan Plus

Version: 2007

Not all bad

Pros: I think it's wise of McAfee to sort of hide the advanced settings behind the more basic options. The default settings are sturdy enough, and changing them could either compromise security or bog a system down by overdoing it.

This suite includes IDS and script scanning. This is a comforting thought, as JavaScript malware is everywhere these days.

Though this software might take a performance toll on older machines, it won't run your system straight into the ground like Norton would.

Cons: Only reason I'd give it a 3 is because you can get this same thing for free from AOL. Can't paste the link here, or I would. (",)

Web Wall

Version: 1.2.07

The search ends here.

Pros: I found this product completely by chance, and it is the only freebie I've found thus far whose IPS employs the positive model. It is extremely light on resources, yet it should be able to block malicious attacks (within normal broadband download limits) years from now.

The positive security model works by admitting pre-defined, whitelisted protocols, and blocking everything else. This is currently the ultimate power in the software IPS realm, ideal for users who place Internet security at a paramount value. A more familiar name in this league would be Citrix.

Every external exploit test (I ain't talking about port scanning) I have tried on this thing has failed. I have absolute confidence in WebWall's protection against Internet attacks over a standard, broadband connection. Next item of business: leaktests (outbound protection).

Cons: Interface opens maximized when you boot into Windows. This should be minimized rather than closed, otherwise you have no protection. This could confuse a novice.

Positive security models produce more false positives than the more common, negative security models. While the average user would never know, it is possible such a firewall could restrict activities that more prolific users (i.e. corporations) need.

SafeSpace Free Edition

Version: 2.0.41

Security is not entertainment genre; leave it to experts

Pros: Free sandbox protection, no limitations. Automatic forced sandboxing. Protection against keyloggers running in sandbox. Easy to move files in and out of sandbox, just like with BufferZone. Nice look.

Cons: Cannot sandbox folders, does not work with portable apps. Works okay with IE, but crashes Firefox incessantly. Rather unusual to see a system-level security program designed for .NET; this hints to inexperience on the part of the programmer, which would also explain the instability.

This is the fourth or fifth version of SafeSpace I have tried. A program of such modest size (esp. when made up mostly of precompiled code) should have had most of the bugs worked out by now; also, bells and whistles begin to look rather frothy when basic functionality such as folder security is missing.

The maker(s) of this program is obviously not a professional; I won't hold my breath until it matures.

Ad-Aware 2007

Version: 7.0.2.1

Fame isn't everything

Pros: It's a classic

Cons: As the threat landscape continues to evolve, Lavasoft's classic anti-adware scanner does not. In 2007, they created a spiffy, new interface; the engine stayed the same.

Even now, Ad-Aware detects only adware. It doesn't detect spyware, much less anything of a truly dangerous nature. While Trojan horses were traditionally treated by the antivirus scanner, they were still classified as spyware. And besides, a bit of overlapping wouldn't hurt these days. But it appears that Lavasoft has no intention of stepping it up, and will continue to rest on their laurels.

Ad-Aware and Spybot are the two oldest anti-"grayware" scanners in existence, just like Yahoo! is one of the oldest e-mail providers. Average users, unless educated otherwise, will assume the name they're most familiar with denotes the best product. It is for this reason, and NO other, that Ad-Aware has a higher rating on CNET than Spyware Doctor and Spy Sweeper (the blind leading the blind). And this, in turn, is why botnets continue to grow...almost no one has adequate protection!!!

PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition

Version: 3.1

Proactive protection!

Pros: This free antivirus does more than simply thwart attacks; it covers up vulnerabilities. PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition's default settings protect your files and system registry from tampering, whether or not it has a signature to identify the offender. I'm impressed!

Cons: Consumes a larger chunk of system resources than an exclusively signature-based product like AVG (most newer products do). It's an opportunity cost of speed in favor of security.

May cause problems on some machines (particularly older ones), although this is usually due to improper settings. Unfortunately, novice users cannot be expected to have much (if any) sense of direction in PC Tools' interface, which offers more "fine-tuning" than those in simpler products like AVG.

Proactive security measures such as those integrated into this product can produce false positives.
