Windows Essentials Media Codec Pack

So easy to install. Must have for all Windows users!

Pros: After messing with video and audio playback on Windows for over 10 years this has got to be the easiest "universal" package I have seen to date. So easy your grandmother could install it. No spyware or other garbage. Works great in Vista. Includes a fantastically efficient playback program called "Media player classic" which seems to make playback far easier when compared with "Windows media player.

Cons: I'm using Vista Home basic. Some files required the use of the VLC media player due to the included media player classic not being able to play them, The codecs worked great, but it seems media player classic occasionally can't open SOME files. If this was my codec pack I would include both VLC and media player classic.Otherwise this is a fantastic package for anyone who enjoys audio and video on a Windows computer. BIG THUMBS UP, FIVE STARS, ETC

Auslogics Disk Defrag

All free software should work this well

Pros: MUCH faster than the defrag program that comes included with Windows XP. No spyware or adware or malware (scanned with Symantec Corp 8.0, SpyBot and AdAware with latest definitions 1/27/07). Comprehensive HTML formatted defragmentation reports.

Cons: It puts Microsofts defrag tool to shame. No cons I can find, honestly.

Spiceworks IT Desktop

AWESOME free tool to see what's happening on various desktops/servers/etc!

Pros: Well the price for starters, it's FREE and does not require me to install anything on the rest of the computers on my network. You can setup the whole thing from one PC, all you need is an admin account. It sets up a small webserver on your PC so you can access Spiceworks from any machine on your LAN with a web browser. It's secure, requires a login and password to access. This is going to be a BIG help since I need to get all my DNS settings the same across the whole LAN. It gives you a pretty good inventory of DNS, installed software, free disk space, and other mission critical stuff that every systems admin needs to keep an eye on. A must have for any small business network/systems administrator!

Cons: Nothing yet, will update my review if I find anything I don't like.

A MUST HAVE for any FireFox user!

Pros: I was so tired of having to register on millions of news sites just to read an article or two, and then getting spam because I gave out my email. Bugmenot has made my surfing for news articles a pleasant experience again. Now I can maintain my privacy and not spend hours filling out stupid registration pages just so I can view free content on news sites.

Cons: Doesn't work on ALL sites. Please know that this NOT for use with "pay" or "non free sites". It's not perfect, sometimes it will put the username and password into the wrong fields if the web page has "username" or "email" in more than one place (like youtube for example). But you can just copy and paste the username and pass into the correct fields by hand and it's still WAY faster and easier to do this than to give out all your personal info and then register and get a bunch of spam.

Pros: It's free (thanks!!!!) and seems to extract well enough.

Cons: The zip archive repair didn't work for me, oh well.
