Adobe Photoshop

Version: CS3

Outstanding but overpriced photo editor

Pros: Photoshop is not only the industry standard for professional photographers, but also many budding enthusiasts.

Almost anything you can imagine doing to a photo - you can do with this.

Cons: Not very intuitive

Very expensive

90% of it's features can be found in Corel's PaintShop Pro X2 - for $49 - $99

Picasa

Version: 2.2

Have used since Google purchased

Pros: I have been using Picasa2 since Google purchased it. I have several "paid" photo organizers and they are slow and cumbersome compared to this.

The "quick fix" for photos has the best algorythym of many of the $80-130 programs.

The editing tools are intuitive and easy to use. Edits made to photos aren't saved to the original - you save a copy so the original doesn't changed.

Cons: Previous versions didn't have a "save as" option that allowed you to place the altered file where you want.

The last release "save a copy" files were incompatible with PaintShopPro X.

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo

Version: 11

All the power of PhotoShop CS3 .....

Pros: I use both PS CS3 and Paint Shop Pro. This latest version of of PSP is very intuitive and straight forward. A new user with just rudimentary knowledge can be making and transforming ordinary photos into extraordinary ones.

Ease of use

Quick uptime

Power

and don't forget price!

Cons: Being a power user I often have many images open at once. Occasionally the program locks up. But restarting PSP and everything is back to normal.

Paint Shop Pro

Version: 10.0

Most of the power of PS, 100% easier to use

Pros: Very intuitive program. Version X is the fastest version so far. I have used PSP since it was shareware around v3.x.

I also have Photoshop, and almost never use it anymore. I've yet to find anything I wanted to do that PSP won't do more easily for me.

One-touch photo repair with live preview and the ability to fine tune on the fly.

Even keystroke shortcuts are intuitive and make sense. PS uses a much more arcane and bizarre naming system for shortcut keystrokes.

Cloning tool for cleaning images is resizeable and very easy to apply.

Live overview window available.

Cons: None come to mind.
