WindowBlinds

Version: 6.02 build 44x86

Brilliant disguise

Pros: Changes Windows, even Vista, to a more agreeable and, for some who take the time--personal--format without slowing down one's system. This is the secret to its succcess. Tastes great, less filling.

Cons: There are too many options. The tail is wagging the dog. That is, the millions of pixelated choices one can make become the program rather than the true object/app: A program to modify the look n feel of the screen. Too many ways to kill a cat here.

WinZip

Version: 11.1

Moderate

Pros: How could the standard compression program (algorithm) for the entire Web be bad, with 200 million or more "judges"? It works very well in compressing. It is fast as heck. The installation is easy. The menu for functions is easy to understand (user friendly).

Cons: The program, considering it's a "common currency" compression method for the Web, ought to be free. I'm not trying to be cheap. But total functionality without annoying reminders to purchase would be called for. The authors of the program, I suppose, would be paid a sum of money to allow this. The installation, note, is difficult; there are many places to slip up -- this due to its quality of being, if I may, piciune and sensitive. In other internet slang terms, you cannot fat-finger it. It should be more robust to errrors.

DropToCD (DataCD/DVD)

Version: 3.5

Kudos for the idea -- simple, useful. However, ...

Pros: The drag and drop interface makes the chore of properly placing an ISO virtually painless.

Cons: The wonderful i/f does not always work, or work right if it does do something. execution of idea awful.

Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium

Version: 7.06.00.306

Program is like a boy scout given a job: He does it well and quietly.

Pros: It installs and then executes with barely a whisper denoting its prescence. After all the "LOUD" shareware/freeware standardized program "ADVERTISEMENTS" and such, this is a relief. So far, at least, and so far as I can tell (!), the function of the product -- to stop viruses -- has worked fine. I have gotten no bugs (viruses, worms, etc). Also, I have Vista Home Premium and the prgm seems to get along with it fine: A feat in itself.

Cons: The program should expand it repetoire of nasties. That is, the program should stop all internet garbage, malware to viruses, this is less a "problem" than a marketing issue. The ads for Avira should emphasize its compatibility with Vista, too.
