Docking Station

Version: 1.95

I can't believe this is free

Pros: So far I've been mostly disappointed with AI driven sandbox games and virtual pets, but "Docking Station" was a very pleasant surprise. Sure, it's just an interactive commercial for "Creatures 3", but it's actually much fun and quite addictive. I'm a complete newbie to the "Creatures" series, so I was totally blown away by the possibilities in this game. It's fun to watch your Norns grow and interact with each other and the gameworld. Teaching them is very rewarding, because they actually seem to learn and give you some feedback, unlike most other games with a similar premise.

Cons: I think there is room for improvement when it comes to direct interaction with the Norns and their environment. The creatures (especially the young ones) and some items in this game are really small, so it happens quite often that you accidentally click the wrong item or action when you try to teach your Norn something. The online registration you have to do before you can get started also annoyed me a bit, but in retrospect, it's not that bad, considering the quality of the game. Finally there's this "banner" (it's actually a giant render image of a Norn) that pops up occasionally, advertising "Creatures 3", which can get on your nerves, because you can't click it off.

Puppy Luv

Version: 1

Okay for kids

Pros: It's a neat game for small children. Even though it's not very hard, I guess it's still challenging enough to grab their attention at least for a while.

Cons: The gameplay is way too simple for anyone above the age of 12, the installation process is pointlessly complicated and the performance is not nearly as good as it should be for a game with such simple graphics. It also has some minor flaws, like the annoying music and the repetitive, uninspired animations.

Billy

Version: 4.1

Not even close

Pros: It's fun to imagine how you could create a virtual chat partner from scratch, but then you actually try it...

Cons: I tried to teach Billy some german, just to find out that the program crashes every time you enter an unknown character. The english conversations weren't that good either. It was mostly just gibberish after a while and the little idiot kept calling me "Weather" for some reason. I also tried to "feed" Billy a text file, which resulted in him just pointlessly citing random lines from that document, completely out of any context.

Projectiles

Version: 1

It's fun for a while

Pros: It's a small game with an entertaining premise, even though I have absolutely no idea why it's in the "Simulation" category. It's more like an arcade game.

Cons: It annoyed me after a while. Not necessarily because of the gameplay, but the minimalistic interface really got on my nerves. It takes more time to actually apply the optimal settings, than it takes to figure them out.

CaptureCAM-S

Version: 2.0.0.15

It does the job, but...

Pros: It does what it says: It records any sounds and on screen movements. The interface is very intuitive and easy to use.

Cons: The fact that this software exclusively uses its own file format renders it completely useless to me, even though this drastically reduces the file sizes. If you want anybody, who doesn't have this program installed to watch your movies, they have to install a player first.
