Path Finder

Version: 4.1.1

This is the God of File Browsers.

Pros: Way too many to name all of them. I'll throw in some highlights.

Columns view. Not an improvement over the Finder, but better than any other file browsers I've seen.

Tabs. Yup. You can view folders in tabs, and even save tab sets. Only other file browser I know that can do that is Konqueror on Linux.

Shelf to store commonly used folders on.

File History

Folder History

Built in command line.

Built in text editor

Shelf for volumes.

Ability to add folder contents in side bar.

Firefox/Safari style bookmarks bar.

Shows path for folder.

Can easily change how data is displayed.

A stack to temporarily drop files before moving to another folder.

Cons: It's not free.

I've had a few issues mounting some volumes.

The shelf on the save menu will use the shelf from the Finder. Not Path Finder.

OpenOffice

Version: 1.0.3

The quest for a good Excel replacement continues.

Pros: 1. It's a complete free office suite.

2. It has most of the functionality that MS Office has

3 It can export to PDF.

4. It will read and write to Microsoft Office files.

Cons: 1. The user face is really ugly when running in X11.

2. All the keyboard shortcuts have been windows/linuxized by default.

3. Has numerous issues opening MS Office files (Power Point and Excel files most noteably. I see many symbols left out in Power Point files such as integral and summation signs. The spreadsheet doesn't seem to import figures well at all, especially regression lines.)

4. It does little to improve what has already become standard in Office products (it just tries to copy MS Office for the most part)

5. The export to pdf function is not as useful as you would hope (on a mac) considering you can print any printable file as a pdf with the OSX print menu (click the pdf button in the print menu, and save as pdf.)

AOL Instant Messenger

Version: 4.7

... No.

Pros: Nothing good about the product its self. But I do need to say that a lot of people use an AIM account, so it is good that it supports that.

Cons: There are better applications that support AIM. For a bunch of features like audio/video conferncing and a nice user interface, use iChat. It also supports Bonjour and Jabber, which you can use to connect to any client (but it's a pain to manage.) There's also Adium, which is compatable with just about any messaging account and has a highly customizeable appearance. It does lack Audio/Video chat though. You really should be using one of those 2.

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 1.5.0.1

Very nice. Almost as good as Safari.

Pros: Highly customizeable with lots of extensions

Highly supported

Moveable tabs

Live Bookmarks

Nice search box

Multi-Platform

Open Source

Cons: Limited RSS functionality. I've run into a bunch of sites that Firefox's live bookmarks feature will not handle RSS feeds for. This includes GMail. In addition, there are several sites out there that do not link RSS directly to the page so you can see it in the address bar, but you have to click on an icon on the page to view them, and this just gives you code if viewed in Firefox, wheras Safari will give the normal RSS view and you can easily bookmark it. Also, the live bookmarks do not include a summary of the articles. RSS in Safari saves me lots of time each day and allows me to view articles easily, and I'm not willing to limit my capabilities in this respect. I hope that this limitation is fixed in future installments of Firefox, as it is a very nice application, and even this complaint isn't all that big as Safari is the only Browser I have tried that does a better job than Firefox in this regard.

AppZapper

Version: 1.3.2

It removed Windows Media Viewer! Absolutely Essential!

Pros: Windows Media Viewer is gone! I tried to just drag it to the trash, but a lot of the contents in the package were "locked" meaning that I would have to view package contents, then manually unlock all of the 300 or whatever help files from foreign languages (The English help files were unlocked and could be deleted easily.) Unfortunately, this process was too tedius to do manually, but App Zapper took care of this no problem.

Cons: It's there to delete applications... it's normally pretty easy to drag the application to the trash and just spotlight the application name to get rid of the other files. The exception being when some @$$ decides to lock a bunch of files, such as Microsoft and Windows Media Viewer. I have not come across any other applications that this would be useful for.
