PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition

Version: 3.1

Impressive

Pros: To start off, it's free. Secondly, the updates seem frequent enough and are automatic as well. The scan times are extremely fast compared to some other anti-viruses. This caught and quarantined a virus the previous anti-virus I had didn't. Thirdly, any new user will have no trouble using this at all. This installs quite well and fast as well.

Cons: There isn't enough guard options, but I guess you get those int he paid version. Secondly, there isn't an option to just remove any viruses caught, it automatically quarantines them.

CyberDefender Free

Version: 1

Found quite a bit of spyware or did it?

Pros: Freeware.

Cons: Apparantly I'm infected with 19 counts of adware that was in my registery. I highly doubt six different programs would miss 19 registry infections.

As for the program, the scanner is extremly slow, it didn't finish doing a quick scan of about 15 gigs in an hour and a half. Other products can doa full system scan in 45 minuts or less. The program also contains false positives. The program does not allow for removal of any spyware/adware..ect.

Trend Micro Anti-Spyware

Version: 3.0

Solid product.

Pros: Easy to install and unistall. Pretty solid in the protection area. Updates are quick and simple. Scans are effective and quick as well as easy to set up and perform. The entire program (including the scans) use up hardly any cpu usage.

Cons: The interface is somewhat difficult to navigate at first; also, it's not that apealing. Some of the program features are hard to use. For example; after the scan is complete you can clean some additional files or just continue fnishing the scan. This can be overwhelming for some people at first, but after a while it is easier to use (like all things with use and time.)

PC Security Test 2007

Version: 7.2

Decent.

Pros: It checks your security settings meaning how well your antivirus, antispywares, and firewall work. It's simulated attacks can help one to improve their security settings.

Cons: Here's the real downer, every time you finish running the simulated attacks it has an add for it's anti virus and there is no way around it nor it taking you to a website to get it. After the test is complete, it recommends scanning your computer to get rid of the traces instead of removing them itself.

McAfee VirusScan Plus

Version: 2008

Tried it, didn't like it.

Pros: Included an anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, and some other useful features. It runs smoothly on vista, scans during the install, and installs the updates during the install as well. Doesn't hog all the resources like other security centers.

Cons: First off, it's a resource hog. During scans and updates, I couldn't use my computer without programs freezing up. I had this on both of my computers for nearly 8 months without it detecting a virus or anything other then gamespy arcade and it wouldn't even quarantine that. The scan times are extremely long with poor detection rate. I managed to grab some activeX nasties and it didn't catch one of them unlike my current Av/Spyware. On vista, none of the components would be recognized as being active at times according to the windows security center and I would restart my computer and nothing then I'd shut everything off then close the window and have to load it back up and see the same old drab Mcafee loading scree then re-enable everything. Restarting my computer didn't work most of the time, oh and it gets better when I was trying to install the Vista Service pack 1 I had to uninstall this program to get it to work. I tried 5-7 times to get that to work before uninstalling this program. The price is pretty high as well, 40 dollars for this program isn't worth it.
